Yeah, I knew the CoL/CoD thing, etc. was unique to and created for Carnivale. I should have clarified that I'm looking for stories with that same general idea, the CoL/CoD being a specific example.

I've seen this question asked before, and frankly, most of the suggested "similar" stories really aren't that similar. :/
The closest book in terms of its atmosphere/vibe/themes that I can think of is Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes. It's about two boys growing up in the 1950s and the mysterious carnival that comes to town, led by a very sinister man named Mr. Dark who has supernatural powers, and at its heart it's about the battle between good and evil.
