I signed Moria and I up for a Yoga course at a studio just around the corner from my office. A couple of other people from work have already been and said it was good. Initially I was just going to sign up Moria to do the classes because she wants to detoxify her system and improve her overall health. I took the first class with her and decided I ( Read more... )

A number of years ago, I used to take Aikido and my sensei actually recommended that we take yoga at least once a week as it would help us with the Aikido. He said that, particularly with falls, you want to be very relaxed when practicing and yoga helps you learn to relax.

Best of luck with both classes!

Yoga is a core body conditioning system that is the basis of most Indian martial arts like the grappling art of Kalaripayat. So it makes a lot of ssense for other martial artists to cross-train in Yoga. The gods know I could benefit from greater flexibility and stronger joints.

This Mike Krivka (Nyk's protagonist at Martial Arts Koncepts)
Just wanted you all to know the whole story...

Nyk has been coming to class and I have been torturing the poor guy with kettlebells, bodyweight conditioning and martial arts training... and he keeps coming back for more! I really try to make the training experience diverse (think ADD) and fun (think Tony Little on Crack)... and Nyk has really hung in there even though he was close to meeting my close friend Pukie on a couple occasions.

Keep up the great work Nyk and I always look forward to having you in class!

I'm sure it is highly entertaining watching me collapse on the mats utterly exhausted and ready to yakk. :-) None of this stuff looks particularly demanding until you start doing a few reps and before you know it your supper is trying to come up for an encore. Although, this doesn't sound like much fun, it is actually one of the best training programs I have experienced and everyone is supportive with equal measures of encouragement and wise-cracking.

Doing focus pad drills after these 'warmups', when your upper body strength has been completely sapped, is a very humbling experience: think Mr. Burns from the Simpsons! Seriously, punching like a little girl.
