Awesome syncronicity - I've literally just got in from planting out the bedding plants I picked up at the weekend!
I would make some recommendations, but I'm not sure what's good to stick in this time of year. Osteospermums perhaps? They usually last quite well for me - at least until we get a frost! Or perhaps some campanula (which also spreads itself around as a good ground-cover plant - ooh, as do the hardy, proper geraniums). These may be longer-term plants than you were considering though.
Ooo thanks for the suggestions. I'll google their growing seasons this weekend, ideally I'm looking for something that I can plant now and will flower in the late summer/autumn. I may be being too optimistic.

Do say what you end up selecting!
