Chapter 24. The Trap
The clock on the dashboard told Adam it was almost midnight. The streets were nearly empty except for a few people rushing for their graveyard shift and some probably scurrying to get home to sleep in their cozy beds.
Adam was huddled against the car door. His arms were wrapped tightly around the bag on his lap. The wounds in his hands hurt more from the tight manner in which he was clutching his bag but Adam welcomed the pain. It allowed him to block off everything else he didn’t want to think about, things he knew would be a thousand times more painful and terrifying.
His whole body ached and he couldn’t move. Alex had to help him out of the car. In front of his apartment, Adam pulled out the key from his bag with shaky fingers. He failed several times in his attempt to insert the key and felt so stupid when he couldn’t even manage the simple task of unlocking his own door. Alex took the key from his trembling hands and easily slid the key inside to open the door. Before Adam could get into his apartment, Alex pulled him close and cupped his face between his hands. He caressed the red mark his angry hand made on Adam’s face and dropped a light kiss on his lips.
“I will pick you up tomorrow.”
Alex’s big hands shook him a bit and lifted his head to force him to make eye contact. He was only released when he nodded.
Inside his cold, empty apartment, Adam heard the muffled sound of the car speeding off into the night. He dropped his bag on the floor like it was a heavy weight bearing down on him. He had a blank glassy look on his face as he went straight to the bathroom without bothering to turn the light on. He stood under the shower and drenched the clothes he was still wearing.
He briskly rubbed his exposed skin with soap. When he felt it wasn’t enough, he frantically took off all his clothes to vigorously scrub every inch of his body. His skin had already turned red from all the rough scrubbing but he did not understand why he still felt so dirty.
He tossed the sponge in fury and slumped helplessly on the floor. He cried out in despair and his body shook from his anger and desperation. All the emotions he had kept at bay from Alex broke down like a strong torrent of water rushing from a dam. His loud wails were filled with so much sorrow that they pierced at his own heart
He wept to mourn the loss of his dreams, the loss of his love, and the loss of the only thing that mattered to him. How could Kris love him now when he was broken beyond repair? What else was left for him to offer, when he was already soiled and defiled? He sobbed until there were no more tears left to shed.
I WILL PICK YOU UP TOMORROW. Alex’s words rang loudly in his ears and gave him the reason to snap out of his despair. If he didn’t leave soon, he wouldn’t be able to run away.
After he had hurriedly packed everything he considered valuable to him, he gave his apartment one last glance. Tears threatened to fall again when he realized he was finally leaving the place he had considered his home for many years, the place he had shared with Kris, the home that had given him so many beautiful memories with Kris. He found it hard to breathe, but he managed to turn around and shut the door behind him. The final click of the door brought him a feeling of dread. He knew that once he left, there was no turning back. Do I have a choice? With the answer clear in his mind, he took Kris’s car and drove as far away as possible from Alex.

Every attempt Adam made to sleep failed. As soon as he closed his eyes all the horrible images of his violation flashed back. It was like reliving the horrid experience all over again. Whenever he got the chance to doze off a little, his sleep would be haunted with nightmares of his rape. He could still feel Alex’s mouth on his body and he could still hear the sounds Alex made as he released his seed inside his body. What was more humiliating was how his treacherous body had participated and found pleasure in the appalling act.
Instead of going to the police to report what happened, he checked in the nearest hotel even if it was a little pricey. He just needed a place where he would feel safe again, even for just a night. Adam had made up his mind that nobody would ever know about what had happened. He swore to himself that he would bring the secret to his grave.
When he went to the reception desk at the hotel’s lobby to check out the next day, he still wore the shades he was wearing the night before to cover his eyes. Adam was thankful that the concierge who helped him last night was still the one at the counter.
“Good morning, Mr. Lambert,” he greeted him cheerfully.
He managed to return a fake smile. He paid with his card and brought out a small package and an envelope from his bag. The package bore the address of Parris and the envelope contained rent money for his apartment. He planned to go back to his apartment to get some more of his stuff when things had settled down a bit.
“Would you be kind enough to mail these for me?” Adam handed the concierge the package and the envelope together with some cash.
“No problem, Sir.”
“Thank you.” Adam left without a clue in the world where he was heading.

Alex was furious when he found out that Adam had run away. When his bodyguards forced open his apartment, Alex saw all the indication that Adam had left in a hurry. His clothes were strewn around, his closet was left wide open, and wet clothes were left in the shower room.
He quickly got Ryan on the phone. “I need your men to help me set up a trap.”
***************************************
Adam was curled up in a small bed, lying on his side with his legs and arms drawn in toward his chest. His eyes and head hurt from crying all night. He already felt weak from lack of sleep. Even if he was starving, he was terrified to leave the seedy hotel where he checked in the night before. He felt like he was being watched.
Adam had never felt so alone. He had kept the TV on the entire time to keep him company. He wished his mother was still alive. He had absolutely no one to turn to now. Even if he had his phone, he could not contact his friends. He could not bear the thought of anyone knowing what had happened to him.
Adam knew he could not hide forever. The little money he had managed to save would eventually run out. He had to find work and learn to survive on his own. Yes, Adam, on your own, without Kris, a nasty voice spoke inside his head.
His mind wandered off to Kris and his heart ached. He wondered what Kris was doing. In his heart, he knew that everything would feel much better if he was in Kris’s arms. But he knew that part of his life was gone now. He did not deserve Kris anymore. The sooner he accepted that painful fact, the sooner he would be able to get on with his life.
The light coming in through the window told Adam that it was probably late in the morning. Despite the ache he felt all over, he forced himself to stand. He knew it was time to move again.
Adam didn’t know his exact location because he just kept on driving. He stopped when he found a nice looking diner along the road. His jacket hid the bruises on his wrists and he left his cap and shades on to avoid inviting any scrutiny. After managing to swallow half of the omelette he ordered, Adam went back on the road again.
He had not been driving long when he was stopped by a police car. Adam pulled over to the side of the road. On his rearview mirror, he saw two huge police officers approaching his car.
“Could I have your driver’s licence please?” the officer said.
“What is this about, Officer?” Adam asked warily while pulling his license out of his wallet.
“Do you know you’re driving with a broken taillight?” The smaller of the two offered the explanation while the other one examined his license.
“Oh, sorry, I didn’t know,” Adam sounded a little relieved that it was just about his taillight.
The larger officer loomed over him and said, “Mr. Lambert, please step out of the vehicle and open your trunk.”
Adam went to the back of the car and saw the broken taillight. He was flanked by the two officers when he opened the rear compartment. One of the officers reached down to get a pack of white substance that was smack in the middle of the trunk. It looked like whoever dropped the pack in there wasn’t thinking of covering it or hiding it underneath where it would be less conspicuous.
“What do we have here?”
Adam watched with vague interest as the two officers examined the pack.
“This is a serious crime, kid. What are you doing with 500 grams of cocaine? You didn’t strike me as a criminal,” the smaller officer said.
Adam couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He was shocked when the bigger officer suddenly held him down on the trunk and did a body search. Adam panicked when he saw that the officer was about to restrain him with handcuffs.
“No! Please listen to me. That’s not mine!” Adam screamed and struggled.
The shorter officer held his hands together while the bigger more intimidating one secured his hands with manacles.
“Well by the looks of it, this boy has had quite an experience with handcuffs already,” the bigger officer said in a mocking tone.
The shorter officer started reciting his Miranda rights, “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be held against you...”
No… no… no…this isn’t happening! When Adam found his voice again, it came out in a high-pitched tone that could not hide his ever growing panic, “Please... you’ve got to believe me, that’s not mine. I don’t know how it got in there.”
It’s not my car, it’s … Even Adam’s thoughts couldn’t incriminate Kris. He could bet his life that Kris had nothing to do with the drugs.
“You can explain that to your lawyer.” The officer pushed his head down to avoid hitting the roof of the police car.
In Adam’s hopelessness, only one thought rose above the chaos in his mind, Kris, why did you have to leave me?
