Chapter 30. Cold Fury

They say that hell hath no fury than a woman scorned. There had never been truer words than these when Alex and Adam returned home from their honeymoon trip and found Naomi waiting for them in their mansion.

“You better have a good explanation for this, Alex!” Naomi was screaming at the top of her lungs waving around a tabloid. Adam was a bit intimidated by her. In her furious state, she looked more like a vengeful witch than a supermodel. Her eyes were shooting daggers. She was fuming mad that Adam wouldn’t be surprised if flames and venom started spurting out of her flaring nostrils and cavernous mouth.

“I don’t owe anyone any explanation, even you, Naomi,” Alex said in a cold, derisive tone.

When it was clear to Naomi that Alex was not daunted by her outrage, her scheming mind made her quickly switched from being a fire breathing dragon to a damsel in distress. She used all her girly charms and tried desperately to entice Alex with a promise of sex as she slithered her arms around him like a snake.

Alex looked annoyed as he disentangled himself from Naomi’s suffocating hold. “Adam and I just came from our honeymoon. We’re both tired, so...”

Naomi did not let Alex finish as she exploded again in anger, “How dare you humiliate me by dumping me over another man! How could you do this to me, Alex! I fucking gave you everything!”

“I have never given you any reason to think that our relationship would amount to anything more than I was willing to offer,” Alex said through clenched teeth, barely holding his temper.

Naomi turned her anger toward Adam, “You! Traitor! Did you truly believe that you succeeded in stealing Alex from me? He will just use you, and once he grows tired of you, he will dump you.” She hurled the tabloid she was holding at Adam who was too shocked to dodge to avoid being hit. The paper barely missed when Alex’s quick reflexes deflected it.

Alex finally lost his temper and slapped Naomi hard. She staggered backward holding her burning cheek in shock. It was the first time that Alex had hurt her. Even Adam was taken aback at Alex’s impulsive show of violence.

“You will never go near Adam again!” Alex’s voice boomed which immediately alerted his bodyguards. “Take her away and tell security that she is no longer allowed to go in or near the premises.

Naomi’s remaining pride refused to leave without a fight. She pushed the guards away and spoke in a voice she could barely control from shaking, “Let me go! I am capable of leaving on my own. You will regret this, Alex. You will pay for this dearly.” She turned on her heels and left without a backward glance.

Alex turned to Adam and rubbed his nape, “Are you alright, baby?”

“Yes, of course,” Adam lied. It wasn’t really just Naomi’s threats that worried him, but also Alex’s ferocity that somehow bothered him even more. He reminded himself not to provoke his husband in the future.

Adam’s attention was caught by the front-page of the tabloid that was left strewn on the floor. ALEX KENNEDY, THE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER BACHELOR, TIES THE KNOT WITH ADAM LAMBERT, HIS BEAUTIFUL MODEL AND DESIGNER! and below the bold headline was a picture of them kissing in all their wedding bliss.

Oh God! What will Kris think if he sees this?

**************************************

Kris had always known that all the money in the world couldn’t buy you happiness. They had given his father the best medical treatment and hired the best specialists money could afford to cure his cancer. Yet, here he was, standing inside a magnificent yet cold mausoleum that his father had a good sense to build which might have resulted from a premonition or from his father’s predilection toward beautiful cemeteries. And it was indeed one of the most popular burial grounds in London-with majestic trees, catacombs underneath colonnades, and thousands, upon thousands of charming sculptures and headstones that were scattered throughout the property-that exuded an oasis of peace and tranquillity.

He was pretty sure though that his father did not intend to be buried here. He knew he would have much preferred to be buried in his hometown, but Kris did not have a choice. He couldn’t leave his mother who was still in the hospital suffering yet another stroke when she learned that her beloved husband had passed away. Friends and relatives who had the means to travel to offer their sympathies had all left and it was just Kris and Katy that were left to deal with the aftermath of a great loss.

Kris felt a little better now. The acceptance of his father’s death became easier because he had prepared for this eventuality since the diagnosis of his cancer. He had to admit though that when it finally happened a week ago, he realized that nothing could really fully prepare you for the cruel reality and finality of death once it hit you squarely in the face.

If it had been difficult for him, it was a million times harder for her mother to accept though. And he understood it. For how could one overcome the loss of a loved one who had become so much a part of you that you could not anymore remember how to live without that person?

Two things stood out in Kris’s mind: First, with his father gone, he was now responsible for everything he left behind-money, properties, and businesses worth billions, and of course, his mother. It was an overwhelming responsibility and he wasn’t certain if he had what it took to at the very least manage what his father had worked so hard for, if he couldn’t make them prosper more. Second, he was also reminded about how short and precious life was not to take risks if it meant fighting for the love of your life. He already knew what he must do. Kris spoke with a strong resolve, “Katy, let’s go home.”

*************************************

“Kris, what are you doing?” Katy couldn’t hide the rising panic in her voice.

“Katy, I need to do this. The doctor said that mom is out of danger. I’ll be back even before she knows I left. I made a promise to Adam that I will go back for him.” Kris was tossing random clothes into his baggage.

“Kris, please, you can’t go,” Katy said pleadingly.

The desperate tone in Katy’s voice brought Kris to an abrupt halt. “Katy, you’ve been a wonderful friend. I can’t thank you enough for standing by me, but I can’t live without Adam.” Kris took his baggage to leave but Katy blocked the doorway. “Katy, please, don’t make this harder than it already is.”

“There’s no more reason for you to go back to California!” Katy’s words rang ominously in the empty house.

Kris was shocked at Katy’s outburst then looked at her with suspicion. “What do you mean? Do you know something that you’re not telling me?”

Her shoulders dropped as she walked toward the bureau. She opened one of the drawers to pull out a roll of newspaper. “I didn’t want to be the one to tell you this, but...” Katy handed him the tabloid.

Kris dropped the bag he was holding to look at the tabloid. Time seemed to have frozen for Kris. He stared at the picture in disbelief and reread the headline several times. “There must be some mistake,” Kris said confused. He flipped the pages frantically. “I’m sure this is just another ad, a publicity maybe to sell their paper. Adam will not do this, Katy. We’re already engaged and he loves me,” Kris said stubbornly.

To hurt Kris was not Katy’s intention. When she first learned about the wedding, she knew she had to tell him but his father’s passing made it impossible. It was already hard enough to deal with one loss; she didn’t know how Kris would handle another.

Seeing Kris in pain tore at her heart. “I’m so sorry, Kris.”

But Kris did not hear Katy. Her voice was drowned by other louder voices reverberating inside his head.

I saw Adam left with my boss but they didn’t say where they were going…

Adam can’t take your call…

Alex gave me this watch…

“No! Adam would never betray me!” Kris ran and headed to his car.

“Kris!” Katy ran after him.

In Kris’s confusion and with his vision blurred with tears, he backed out of the garage without waiting for the road to clear. In a split second a loud crash of metal against metal was heard, followed by a bloodcurdling scream.

***************************************

Kris was drowning in a vast emptiness. Everywhere his head turned was darkness and a deafening silence. Below him was an endless abyss of blackness. Slithering shadows were crawling from the deep chasm below, slowly creeping up and around his legs, pulling him down farther into the depths.

Kris swam furiously away from the spidery hands and propelled himself up to the surface. Hope washed over him as he was greeted by a beam of light. The air in his lungs was running out, but the surface was still way out of his reach. His entire body ached and his arms and legs had grown weary from pushing repeatedly against the water. His limbs were like dead weights that kept him from rising above the surface. He wanted to give up. He knew no matter how hard he swam, he would not make it.

“Wake up, Kris.”

“It’s the pain medication.”

The muffled voices came with blinding flashes of light. He could understand what the voices were saying but it sounded like he was hearing it from underwater. His eyes felt heavy with sleep and he couldn’t open them. All he could see were hazy shadows teetering between dream and reality, hovering between sleep and wakefulness.

Adam! His beautiful face constantly haunted him. Don’t’ leave me! An instant paralyzing pain drove through his heart. He could feel warm wetness pouring down the side of his eyes but his hands couldn’t move to wipe the tears. He could hear stifled gut-wrenching screams from inside his mind choking him.

The pain was overwhelming and his instinct forced his body to fall back into a deep sleep filled with never-ending nightmares. There was no escape for him. Even death would be more painful in the absence of his love.

I want to live! Even if it meant being in the constant company of pain, Kris preferred this-to live in a world where he could still at least see Adam’s smile, hear his laughter even if he already belonged to someone else.

It went on and on. Kris hovered between consciousness and sleep in a cruelly repeated pattern that he started to fear that he might not wake up again, until a miracle happened.

“Adam!” Kris sat up and winced at the sudden pain that assaulted his head. Katy was immediately by his side.

Katy started to panic when Kris tried to stand up. She almost lost her balance when he fell forward, still too weak to support his weight. She helped him lie down on the bed again.

“I’ve got to find Adam…, Katy…, please help me,” Kris begged weakly.

“Are you trying to kill yourself?” Katy shouted in frustration. “You almost died, Kris! You’re lucky that the car that hit you wasn’t moving too fast, but you still suffered a serious concussion.”

When Kris remained quiet, she felt sorry for raising her voice at him. “Kris, you’ve got to learn to forget Adam. He is now a married man. If he was able to move on without you, then you have got to let him go.”

Katy was thankful when she saw Kris closed his eyes again. She thought that maybe he was just a little delirious because of the brain injury he sustained. The stressful events of the week had started to take its toll on Katy and her eyes became heavy with sleep. She didn’t want to leave Kris alone in the hospital so she decided to take a short nap on the couch.

When Katy woke up, Kris was already gone.
