Chapter 46. Epilogue
Adam woke up for the first time without remembering any nightmares troubling his sleep. He felt the warm solid presence of Kris beside him still sound asleep and he had never felt safer and happier in a long while.
The dawn was slowly breaking and he could see the sun slowly peeking in the east. He smiled in wonder to see the moon still lingering in the sky as if waiting for the sun to fully appear. And as if by magic, Adam held his breath to witness how even for a brief moment the two worlds of night and day collided as the sun and the moon finally shared one world in the sky.
Adam could not help but cry tears of joy. Kris awoke from the sound of Adam’s soft sobbing and he asked him why he was crying. Adam could not form the words in his mouth to explain and so he did the next best thing; he pointed to the sky and Kris’s eyes followed the line of his finger. Not needing any words, Kris understood the meaning of what he saw and he couldn’t also help but to shed tears of happiness.
At long last, after all the pain and hurt they had gone through, there was no more reason for any doubt, especially now that it was already the universe telling them that they truly belonged to each other.
*******************************************
It has been exactly four years since Adam and I exchanged our wedding vows, but the memory of him walking toward me would forever be etched in my heart. It was one of the happiest days of my life because Adam finally became my husband. All our friends and loved ones were there including my mother who had finally accepted Adam in the family. Life has been very kind to us and we always remind ourselves that our business, which flourished with more branches, only comes second to our family.
Adam and I decided to go to the beach and have a quiet private wedding anniversary celebration with just him, me, and Noah. Noah was a monumental decision that we both made and would never ever regret doing. When we were planning on having a baby, Katy generously offered to be our surrogate and carried the fertilized egg from an anonymous donor.
Little Noah is the spitting image of his father, Adam, with reddish golden hair, freckles, and beautiful blue eyes. I thought I would never be able to love anyone as much as I love Adam, but when I first held that bundle of joy in my arms, I knew I was a goner. Adam always reminds me not to spoil him, but I always tell him that children are meant to be spoiled.
“Papa!” I turn and leave my grilling to watch Noah run toward me, Adam walking not far behind. He just turned two and the first words he learned were papa and dada. I spread my arms wide to catch him and swing him around. The giggles that fill the air are like musical notes to my ears.
“Do you love, Papa?” I shower his small chubby face with kisses and tickled his tummy with my lips.
Another burst of giggles erupt. “Yes!” Tiny soft chubby hands grasp my face and wet lips kiss my nose.
“Hey! What about me?” Adam pretends to look hurt.
Noah’s small arms barely go around his neck, “Love you, dada,” and he kisses him with his pursed lips.
Adam takes Noah in his arms and cleans him up. After dinner, Noah immediately falls asleep in Adam’s arms; both are too tired from swimming and playing all day.
If I were to be asked where heaven is, I would readily answer, here with Adam and Noah. I lie down beside my beautiful husband with our adorable son between us and drop short kisses on both of them. Holding the two most precious things close to my heart, I sleep soundly knowing that I am the happiest man in the universe.
