The once peaceful and beautiful village had been quickly overrun. An interminable siege was undertaken to ensure unequivocal surrender. Its peaceful inhabitants, not used to violence and war, were easily subdued. King Eber, together with his soldiers, fought bravely to protect the villagers and keep the enemy away from the castle, but the massive army that attacked proved to be too much to defeat. In the end, the king’s troops had to fall back into the castle where the Queen and the Prince were tasked to hold the fort and protect the women and children who were able to take refuge in the castle when the Barbarians launched a surprise attack in the middle of the night.
Inside the castle, the royal family with their trusted knights knew without a doubt that they had been defeated. It was no longer a question of protecting their thrones and keeping what is rightfully theirs but to save as many of their people as possible by surrendering to the terms of the enemy with their pride and dignity still intact.
King Eber was trying his best to control the tremors that were racking his body. He knew of this impending doom. For many years, even before he was king, stories of a ruthless band of barbarians waging wars in the north had troubled the serene and humble independent kingdoms in the west. It had also been told that the barbarians were expanding their territory to be the largest, strongest, and unrivaled empire that ever existed and would only stop until they had enslaved all of the proud kingdoms of the earth.
In recent years, they had gained alarming strength from subjugating much larger and powerful nations. When they did not get full cooperation, they killed and took by force what they considered useful-wealth, land, strong young men to further strengthen their army, sturdy work slaves for free labor, and beautiful pleasure slaves to entertain their worldly desires. For those they considered useless, they cast them off mercilessly-the old, the weak, and the unattractive-without money, land, home, and worst separated from their loved ones.
Eber and the other kings in the west prayed that their smaller kingdoms would not catch the evil eye of the enemy and anchored their false hopes on the belief that they will be spared. But alas, all their hopes shattered when unconfirmed reports had reached them that the barbarians had already crossed the west borders. But strangely enough, it was rumored that the Barbarians were looting the smaller villages for something else. The word on the street was that after the king surrendered and declared his sworn allegiance to the enemy, the Barbarians would order to see all the people gathered without exception to be presented as peace offerings. The savages would then proceed to closely survey the crowd and when satisfied that whoever or whatever they were looking for was not there, they unceremoniously leave taking only a few valuables that caught their fancy.
It was now his time to find out what exactly these barbarians were searching for-he just hoped they did not find it in his castle. Looking at the two most precious things in his kingdom, King Eber was ready to lose everything except his Queen, Leila and his Prince, Adam. He knew what he must do. With a heavy heart, he kissed his wife and only son, and before proceeding out of the castle to meet the leader of the barbarians, gave out orders to his trusted knights to gather all of the kingdom’s wealth as peace offerings. He wanted to lure these savages into taking only their wealth instead of their people.
In daylight, King Eber started to question the wisdom of his decision to fight the enemy. They were truly no match for this kind of army. The soldiers surrounding the castle were purebred warriors who were taught to do only one thing-to fight and win. Their strong armor and heavy weapons emphasized their large and muscular physique. No compassion can be read from their eyes that only exuded pride of knowing that they were undefeated. And when Eber was brought in front of the two barbarian leaders, he felt the otherworldy energy emanating from them and for the first time in his life, Eber felt afraid. The two men were set apart from the rest because they were surprisingly handsome in a rugged way. They did not speak and seemed to be waiting for him to make the first move. And understanding what was expected of him, Eber swallowed all of his pride for the sake of his people and loved ones, and knelt down on one knee as a sign of his total submission.
The taller one of the two leaders stood up and spoke, “I expect you’ll redeem your stupidity of resisting us by showing peace offerings worthy of our stature.”
“Jared, since this is the fifth straight kingdom to fall and we’re not even sure if what we’re looking for is here, I want to rest here awhile before moving on,” the other leader added.
Wanting to get rid of these barbarians at the soonest time possible, Eber replied, “The peace offerings have already been prepared for your viewing. Give us an hour to prepare the food.”
“Make sure you also throw in worthwhile entertainment while we dine, old man.” Jensen, the other leader, smirked at Eber.
Before the barbarians entered the castle, Eber and Leila instructed Adam to be inconspicuous and to blend in with everyone. As Eber unobtrusively observed the barbarians while they were eating, he realized to his dismay and much to their disadvantage that contrary to the reckless chaos he expected from these savages, they displayed astounding shrewdness and order underneath their crude and vulgar manners. They were definitely not the group to cross.
When the barbarians have stuffed their bellies with as much food as they could, Jared and Jensen demanded to be shown the peace offerings.
With just a nod from King Eber, several beautiful male and female slaves donned in their most lavish and scanty clothing came out in a procession carrying chest upon chest overflowing with sparkling jewels and gold.
But instead of being impressed by the amount of wealth and beauty in front of them, Jared and Jensen were bored and insulted by the offering.
“Is that it? I did not travel hundreds of thousands of leagues and risk life and limb just to get more of something I already have,” Jared stated with annoyance.
Jenner stood up to approach King Eber and Queen Leila who were standing beside the thrones. “Are you trying to insult us”?
“We’re just a small kingdom. Those are all the wealth we have. Please take them all with you and leave us in peace.” Eber pleaded.
“Only… after we have seen all your people. Gather all of them here in front of us and be quick about it before Jared and I lose our patience with you,” Jensen said dismissively and went back to sit on the throne beside his brother.
King Eber made an immediate order to follow the demands of the barbarians.
While the soldiers were going around the large crowd gathered in front of the throne, searching for they did not know what, King Eber and Queen Leila held their breaths and were frantically searching for Adam in the crowd. When Leila spotted Adam-hidden among the slaves bearing gifts that were dismissed to stand at the side-smiling nervously at her, she smiled back with relief, only to look at Jensen eyeing her with suspicion. Chills ran down her spine when he gave her a knowing smile that told her she had been discovered. When Jensen did not move from the throne, Leila started to relax and thought that maybe she just imagined everything.
After the captain of the barbarians approached the throne to deliver the news to the brothers that the search failed again, King Eber and Queen Leila heaved a sigh of relief that it was finally over.
“Bring all these commoners out of the castle, I’m growing weary.” Jared said in disgust.
King Eber and Queen Leila looked at each other with hope in their eyes, especially when the first of the slaves bearing gifts was almost out of the door. Their shoulders suddenly fell when Jensen ordered for the doors to be locked before any of the slaves including Adam made it to the door.
“I think those jewels deserve a second look, don’t you think so, Jared,” Jensen said.
Jared simply shrugged his shoulders in response, as the slaves, together with Adam who got trapped in the group, were asked to line up again in front of the throne.
“If I know my history well, brother and I’m sure you’ll agree with me that the cause of the downfall of even the strongest empire in the world is always pride and it is pride without the wit to back it up.” Jensen remained seated in his throne as he spoke eyeing Leila and willing for her to follow his hand that started caressing the arm of the empty throne to his left. Leila’s heart skipped a beat when she realized what Jensen was trying to communicate. And she turned white when she saw the wicked smile on Jensen’s face when the realization hit her face.
Jensen continued his tirade. “And you are no different from the rest, Eber. You also grossly underestimated us. You thought that because we’re uncivilized, that we were less intelligent. Am I right, Eber?” Jensen darted an accusing look directed at Eber and he saw him flinched.
“Did you think we were that stupid not to notice that you have been trying to fool us into believing there are just two members in the royal family… when clearly one is missing who obviously sits in this third throne?”
Jensen stood up and slowly walked toward the line of slaves.
Queen Leila’s heart was beating so fast. Her throat was dry and even if she wanted to speak, her mouth was paralyzed with fear; Adam will soon be discovered. She dared to look at his son. Adam, who was wearing a cloak with a hood that partially covered his face, now stood out like a sore thumb from the rest of the scantily clothed slaves. He was rooted in place, but cringed when Jensen stood right in front of him to continue hurling angry words that reverberated in the large room.
“First, you insult our strength by fighting back!
Second, you affronted our status by offering lame gifts!
Third, you slighted us by disobeying our orders!
And now, you clearly offended our intelligence by thinking you can make a fool of us!” Before Jensen could finish his last words, he grabbed Adam’s cloak with his right hand and with his left pulled his hood backwards to reveal his face.
Jensen was caught unprepared by the beauty of Adam’s face. His blue eyes were like clear water that sparkles, his luscious lips that were trembling with indignation looked soft and sweet, and there was also pride and innocence shown on his face that Jensen couldn’t wait to break.
“You’ve got to take a look at this, brother.” Jensen was holding Adam in place who was struggling to free himself from Jensen’s hold.
Jared felt the excitement in Jensen’s voice. When he got close enough, his heart started beating fast. His uncle was right. They would know immediately what they were searching for. And he knew that their search was finally over...
