Fic: Longer Ways to Go (CSI, Nick/Greg, PG13)

May 21, 2009 10:27

I prefer not to post a lot of explanation along with a new fic. I'd really rather just post the fic and let it stand on its own, but sometimes it can't be helped. So here's the explanation for this one, as succinctly as I can make it.

Longish A/N behind the cut with lots of thinky thoughts on writing style. )

series: pancake, fic: csi, series: surfing, csi, fic

Sigh. I love how you write love -- all sweet and comforting and hot as hell :-)

My favorite part: The argument over Lucky's carrot. Heee. Plus the story Lucky picking out his carrot!

I stole the entire carrot thing from my mom's dog. Well, he never picked out his own carrot, but he does love them a lot so we have to keep a rotating supply, and Petsmart is the only place that stocks them.

Anyway, thanks! That makes me feel a little better. I'm working on feeling better about my writing. It's a challenge.

You should feel good about your writing. Also your characterization is always super spot on which one of the main reasons I love your writing so much. Characterization is my favorite thing.

I appreciate that. I mean, you know characterization/character voice is really important to me, no matter how many shortcuts I'm taking with my actual prose, so thanks for the reminder that I do have some strengths :)

'making love' in that sense that Greg always thought was kind of corny until it happened to him the first time

Ahhh, I really like that.

Thanks :) I almost took that line out, so I'm relieved to hear it.

I confess that I rarely find fault with your writing...especially Nick and Greg. I further confess that I found nothing at all wrong with THIS writing, and lovedlovedloved every minute. The Surfing Series (tm) was always one of my favorites, combining as it did my great love of the sport and my great love of the two of them. I am tickled to have the past melded so seamlessly into the present. It gives me hope for more of the same in the future!

Thanks!

Thanks :) You are a little biased when it comes to these two, I think, but I appreciate it nonetheless. I did really have fun writing this, though, and I'm happy with the way it turned out. Though you deserve at least half the credit, since it was your idea in the first place.

I think that we should schedule a side trip to Rincon Bay. For research. We want to be authentic. That's important. Besides, I haven't been to Puerto Rico since my honeymoon and the beaches are awesome. Better waves than Hawaii...fewer tourists to get in the way. What? It's educational! I have lot's of sunscreen and we can rent boards. It'll be great!

I think you certainly did succeed here. It somehow has a more polished feel than (what little because I suck *g*) I've read from you lately. And that isn't to say I ever thought your writing was sloppy, or that this is too neat. Not sure this makes an awful lot of sense, but I tried. Thing is even though the writing style feels different, you show that bond between two people in the most wonderful of ways. *hearts*

And it only now occurred to me I take those shortcuts (and more) all the time, but since I only do a tiny bit of RPing these days I'm even more with the 'it doesn't matter' how I write. Who cares indeed!

Thanks. I'm not sure if I stopped caring because people stopped reading, or if people stopped reading because I stopped caring, or if it was something else altogether, but yeah, the quality certainly dropped off there for awhile. I figure if I'm going to spend my time on something it might as well be good, which means I need to start paying attention to word choice again.

::shrug::

It is what it is. I know plenty of people will never comment on my fic no matter how good or bad it is, but at least I can work on the stuff that I'm aware needs improvement.

I think the comment thing is what killed the last of my desire to actively participate in fandom, to be honest. I'm not the most confident of people (I know, a shocker, that) out there, and when 0 people comment on fic time and time again. When 1-3 comments is a major achievement? It kind of stops being fun, and starts being painful.

The lack of comments has little to do with the quality of writing I find. That is, I know I'm definitely not the greatest writer out there, but I'm not blind and see far worse writers getting loads of comments.

Oh well. In then end I suppose it's all about wanting to improve yourself, and your own writing and the number of comments shouldn't matter. But somehow that mantra stopped working for me a long time ago, obviously ( ... )

Pouring a ton of your own emotional energy into something and having it connect with no one (or very few people) is really heartbreaking, absolutely. I totally get what you're saying. And it's true that quality has nothing to do with it. There's a tiny fandom that I co-started recently, without naming any names, and it has a small following, but there is very, very little commenting going on where fic is concerned. Moreso on other people's than mine, though, and on a friend's recent fic someone commented that this friend and I were 'monopolizing the fandom'. Which...I don't even know where to start with that ( ... )
