So I promised
neverminetohold to make a tutorial for how I made this icon:
It's very, very simple, so I decided to make two versions: one with a texture and another one without any resources outside of standard Photoshop tools.
Note: I have a Polish version of Photoshop. So if I get any names of the tools/effects wrong (like, you find that they don't exist in your programme), then please let me know.
I use Photoshop CS3.
Version 1 - with a texture
It won't look exactly the same like the original icon, I haven't saved the psd for it, but it's just a matter of colouring.
1. We start with a cropped pic:
2. Now we do the colouring we want to have (I duplicated the layer, set it* to "color dodge" (opacity 40%), added another layer and filled it with #fcba09 set to "multiply" (opacity 30%)). I now have this:
3. Now we add another layer and paste the texture (I'm so sorry, I tried to find who was the maker of the texture but I had no luck :O It's not mine, anyway, so credit goes to the maker).
4. We need to rotate it 90 degrees to the left and set it to "lighten". This is what we have now:
You can stop here or you can play some more with the colouring. I added one more layer with a dark red colour and sharpened the whole thing a bit and that's my final icon:
Version 2 - without a texture
Steps 1 and 2 are exactly the same as in version 1.
3. We add a new layer and fill it with the white colour (#ffffff). Now we change the colour to black (#000000), go to brushes and pick one of the standard ones. Then we use it on our layer - we draw a shape that we want to blend the picture into. I made randomly something like this:
And just like with the texture in the first version, you se it to "lighten" and voilà!
You can play with the brush tool and get some really cool shapes. Here, have some examples (not the best ones, but you get the idea):
And that's basically it. If you have any questions or want me to explain something in detail, just leave a comment and I'll do what I can :)
*by "set it" I mean "pick the blending mode", you can usually find the tool on the right within the layers window. If you don't see it, just click F7 and it should appear (at least it does in my version of Photoshop). Here's the layers window:
click.
