So I haven't posted much lately, but this time it's because I have too much to say... too many musings for one post. I think I've come to a point at which I can sum up my mental stew, but first a quick update on resolutions:

* Food: we're keeping to our schedule and eating resonably well. If there's anything I'm not having in moderation, it's soy ( Read more... )

My wife highly recommends this book by Thich Nhat Hanh. ISBN 1573225681

I own that book, and will re-read it this summer, actually. Yes, it's an excellent book. Have you read it?

I've considered getting it a few times from our local used book shop, but have yet to do so. How seriously are you thinking about Buddhism? If you become a monk, I want to see pictures of you shorn and in robes. ;)

I'm not called to monastic life in either tradition. According to Paul it's marry or burn and I need to do a lot of fucking to stay sane.

But as a Christian pastor, I'll get to do fun things like shave my head if the youth group raises enough money for a mission trip!

Nice post. You and I seem to be on the same page about a lot of things. I've never had a problem disagreeing with the church or admitting that I take some stuff in the Bible with a grain of salt, but I guess being a scientist allows me to do that. Well, anyone of any occupation can do that. I can't imagine what it must be like going through seminary and juggling all the thoughts/questions you have. I have to admit, I think Jesus and Buddha could've hung out together. I always picture Jesus as this laid-back, hippie sort of dude. I think he'd be pissed at the way he's portrayed and the crap that gets carried out in his name.

I do think it's great that you guys are starting a new life in Boston and are creating your own family through your friends. I know the friends I made while I lived in Michigan feel like family to me and they've gotten me through more than I can ever say. Hopefully things continue to go well in Boston. :-)

Your version of Jesus and the Kevin Smith/Chris Rock version sound pretty similar.

Pretty much. I think Kevin Smith really hit the nail on the head.
