Chapter One The front door slammed loudly, announcing Kyuhyun's return. Heechul swooped down and began prodding and shaking him, all the while screaming for Kyuhyun to return his hairbrush.
"I didn't take it, hyung, and that's final." Kyuhyun's voice was quiet and controlled, as though he was repressing some emotion. Zhoumi came to join them in the living room, hanging an arm casually around Kyuhyun.
"Ah, our Kyuhyunnie must be feeling the stress now! Three more months before you turn fifteen, Kyu. You must do as well as Donghae!" At this, Kyuhyun glanced sharply at Zhoumi, who simply nodded.
"Donghae just made his first kill an hour ago."
Kangin patted Sungmin awkwardly on the back as the boy continued sobbing, trembling in his embrace. He wasn't used to huge displays of affection like this, it was normally Siwon or Ryeowook that did the hugging. However, Sungmin had entered the house without the groceries and in a distraught state, tears cascading down his cheeks and Kangin had simply pulled the poor boy into a hug.
Rubbing soothing circles into the small of his back, Kangin murmured words of comfort into Sungmin's ear, hoping to calm him down. Just then, the front doorbell rang and Sungmin glanced fearfully at it, as though frightened of something behind it. Kangin left Sungmin on the couch and went to open the door. Before him stood a boy with a look so icy it gave him shivers up and down his spine. He was biting his lip nervously, trying to peer into the house, as though he was searching for someone.
Sungmin screamed hysterically behind him, and Kangin turned back so fast it was a wonder he didn't sprain his neck. He was pointing at the boy at the door, crying even harder now.
"Appa! Keep the ghost away from me!"
A soft chuckle reached Kangin's ears. He saw the boy at the door smiling slightly, and for a moment he was amazed at how the smile transformed his features and made him much more human-like.
"I'm definitely not a ghost. Anyway you ran away so fast just now, and I don't want there to be any misunderstanding. So here I am, offering my apologies. I live in the house opposite, and my name is Kyuhyun. May I know your name?" Kyuhyun held out his hand expectantly, waiting for Sungmin to shake it. He hoped that the ten minutes he had spent with his hands wrapped around a hot mug of water had made his hands warmer.
Sungmin calmed down slightly and walled over cautiously from the sofa. Taking Kyuhyun's hand, he shook it and smiled slightly. "My name is Sungmin, and I'm sorry too, for jumping to conclusions."
"Alright. I must be going now, and I apologise once again for any inconvenience caused today." Kyuhyun gave a ninety degree bow and stepped out of the house.
Kangin gazed thoughtfully at Kyuhyun's retreating back. "I didn't know the house opposite had any occupants.." Kangin scratched his head.
Zhoumi pounced on Kyuhyun after he entered the house again, looking slightly exhausted. "Where were you and who were you talking to?" He pointed a finger at Kyuhyun accusingly.
Kyuhyun sighed. "If you have to know, I was talking to our neighbour, Mimi."
"Whatever for?!"
"I think I scared him earlier on. But that's not the main point. I just want my first killing to be as successful as Donghae's.." Kyuhyun looked at the ground as he said it. Locating a spider that was scuttling across the cold cement floor, he kept his gaze transfixed on it as he waited for Zhoumi's reply.
Kyuhyun felt himself get drawn into an embrace. "Oh, Kyu. I'm sure you'll do just fine." Kyuhyun could hear the pride and the trust that Zhoumi had in him.
He needed to do this.
