Question.

Look, an LJ-only, personal question post!
I am in the midst of reformatting some of my lifestyle choices, and so I'd like to get the opinion of folks whose values and judgment I trust (you).

How do you define taking care of yourself? What are some things that you do to take care of yourself, both daily and long-term?

I appreciate any and all comments ( Read more... )

I try to make sure that I have both time for myself and entertainment for myself.

With a garlic/paprika homemade mayo as a dipping sauce. Succulent.

In terms of my body I only look ahead about a week. I don't even go to the dentist.

- no dairy (my skin is awesome because of this)
- at least 7 hours of sleep a day (a challenge when I have to wake up at 4:45 to make scones and shit but I still make it happen)
- moisturize

It depends on the context.

With regard to independence, I consider one taking care of themselves when they no longer have to ask for money or assistance from their parents.

That is something I do.

With regard to general well-being, I believe it includes setting up a retirement account for one's self, having insurance in the event of something, a little emergency fund, exercising regularly, working regularly but simultaneously making sure to take time out for one's self.

That's something I don't do.

I guess I skipped the second part. It's hard for me to divide up daily and long-term because with regard to my definitions, I both daily and long term don't ask for help and otherwise, I don't take care of myself. hehe

The usual health stuff: food, exercise, sleep. For me, I find it's amazingly easy to skip sleep, and it tends to feed back on itself - I wind up staying up because I'm too tired to realize that I need to sleep more.

Exercise is something I try do do as part of my daily life - use the stairs, not the escalator; walk whenever possible; if I do drive don't waste time looking for a close parking space, just walk that extra dozen yards.

Food is something that varies according to the individual, so while dropping a type of food may do wonders for some, don't expect it to necessarily work for you. Finding out what foods I was allergic to made a tremendous difference to how well I could get around and helped me lose weight.

And then there's the social stuff. Getting out and meeting people is always good for the soul.
