Part of my plan for The Future is that at some point I will join the Peace Corps (it keeps getting put off further and further for one arbitrary reason or another) and so to that end this semester I have started volunteering to teach ESL! In the case of "went hiking":

Hiking is actually the present participle form of to hike, meaning that it's an adjective or a noun rather than a verb. Went is the actual verb in this case, as a past-tense verb. It's a grammar thing that I think is unique to Germanic languages.

That's the best I can describe it without getting all grammar nerd on you, which is a good thing, because I can barely remember the lectures and I lost my Latin notes on it.

Good to hear that you're staying involved with the church! I like ESL, especially teaching people who speak Farsi as their first language, dunno why.

This isn't through the church, this is through Fairfax County. The church's ESL program hasn't happened for a year because no one wants to organize it.
