M asked the other day, while we were all at Einstein's and not yet catatonic with alcohol,  whether 0.999999... repeated is equivalent to 1, to which I replied with an emphathetic yes while A replied with an equally energetic no. While his is perhaps the more intuitive answer, in mathematics infinity isn't a quantifiably 'real number' in the way ( Read more... )

Well we have to handle infinity rigorously somehow, otherwise we wouldn't be able to fuck around with it and make it do cool things. Like 0.999.. doesn't actually get to 1 just as you can't actually calculate infinitely many digits:p
