Halloween 1992 Through the Eyes of Mrs. Norris

The shouts and laughter of students eagerly heading to the Great Hall echoed through the cold, damp corridors of Hogwarts Castle and interrupted the scrawny, dust-colored cat stealthily stalking some unsuspecting mice. She looked up and scowled in the direction of the noisy youngsters. While such a reaction might not be possible for an ordinary cat, this feline was certainly no ordinary cat. This was a kneazel named Mrs. Norris and she was the pet of Argus Filch - or perhaps he was her pet. Such a notion could actually be debated.

I hate Halloween! Mrs. Norris darkly thought to herself. All of these beastly little children running all over the castle after they should be in the library or their dorms. It completely ruins my hunting and these little beasts always cause trouble.

Mrs. Norris walked quietly to a corner and looked around to see a small group of Hufflepuff girls giggling while some Ravenclaw boys were flirting and showing off. Mrs. Norris again scowled and was about to turn and leave when she noticed three Slytherin boys further down the hallway acting suspicious as they disappeared into a doorway and down a winding staircase.

Slytherins! Out of their usual area of the castle and that stairwell does not go to the Great Hall. I’ll just follow them and see what trouble they’re up to.

Mrs. Norris darted quickly down the corridor causing the Hufflepuff girls to squeal in fear. Mrs. Norris vaguely heard one of the Ravenclaw boys warning the others to run before Filch came as she scurried down the stairs after the Slytherins. By the time she arrived on the second floor, the Slytherin boys were nowhere to be seen. Disappointed, she was about to turn around and go back up the stairs when she another student walking purposefully but unseeingly ahead of her down the corridor.

Mrs. Norris immediately recognized the short Gryffindor girl with long, flaming red hair. Hmmm, that strange Weasley girl. She can’t be up to anything good; especially being the younger sister of those twins. And she has that weird expression and odd scent about her again. I’ll follow and let my human know what trouble she’s making.

As Mrs. Norris started to follow Ginny Weasley she again saw the Slytherin boys slipping into an empty classroom. Mrs. Norris looked at the disappearing figure of Ginny Weasly turning a corner and back at the room into which the boys had entered. After a moment’s hesitation, she hurried into the classroom. Whatever the boys had been planning, as soon as they saw Mrs. Norris, they screamed “It’s Filch’s cat!” and went running out of the torch-lit room and down toward the Great Hall.

A hint of a smile crossed the whiskered face as Mrs. Norris exited the classroom and hurried after Ginny. Mrs. Norris had a pretty good idea where the young girl was going as she had spied her there on more than one occasion. As she neared the girls’ loo haunted by Moaning Myrtle, Mrs. Norris saw a large puddle of water seeping under the door to the loo and in the hall and pooling in the middle of the corridor.

Yes! Mrs. Norris thought to herself with satisfaction, I have the Weasley girl. I’ll call my human and she will be punished - hopefully severely. This is turning into a good night after all. Perhaps I can catch her obnoxious brothers doing one of their pranks and . . . what is that strange image in the wat . .

Mrs. Norris toppled over onto the smooth stone floor, petrified, with her yellow, unmoving eyes opened wide in horror.
