The Reading Life

May 23, 2011 10:47

One of my goals this year has been to read more.  I know that may sound strange given my profession, but I started realizing last year that I just wasn't reading enough.  When I was growing up I'd devour books on the weekend, usually staying up until all hours of the night.  Then, once I hit college I sort of... stopped.  Sure I read for class but ( Read more... )

Great post, Carrie! This is the same problem I've been having. I want to read, but whenever I start to, it just doesn't feel like work-- so back to the computer I go. I guess I need to make it part of my "work day" just like writing, revising & critiquing.

Thanks!

I hear ya! I'm a librarian and I have the same problem. My to-reads list on GoodReads has hit the 300 mark, the pile of books on my desk is ridiculous (and darnit if 'Dark and Hollow Places' didn't just show up!!!). I'm trying to remind myself to go to bed at a decent hour so I can read. But there is the DVR queue, the Netflix list, video games, and, of course, blogs to read! By the time I remember to read, I can barely keep my eyes open! I've only read 26 books this year! *hangs head in shame*

I used to read everything could get my hands on when I was a kid- I always got to choose my own books during class novel studies because I had always already read the books we were supposed to cover in class. Then in university, like you, I felt guilty if I read anything other than my textbooks. For years the only books I allowed myself to enjoy was the Harry Potter series. In 2009, I challenged myself to read a 100 books that year. I wanted to branch out and catch up on everything I had been missing while in school. I made it- 102 books in 2009. :) IIt's hard to believe I had lost my love of reading for so long, now that I have it back.

I just finished The Dark and Hollow Places tonight. I loved it. You have a really great way with words. Your series is so beautifully written and so heartbreaking. I am sad that I read it so quickly and it's over now. LOL.
