The air conditioning hasn’t worked since ever, but it clicks on noisily one day halfway through her morning shift. Goosebumps rise on her washed-out skin underneath florescent lights. It’s Monday morning and God, she wishes it wasn’t.

“William Edwards,” Freya reads off the form in front of her. A sad looking man with a grey face approaches her box holding a dirty handkerchief to his mouth and nose. “You may go through,” she tells him. Edwards opens his mouth to thank her, but a barking cough comes over him. He chokes on it for a moment, then blood and phlegm fly out of his lungs and onto the plexiglass separating them. Freya flinches and buzzes open the door to the anterior of the clinic.

It’s Monday morning, and she might be dying already.

The Yester came to power in the riotous times following the Deceit. Claiming they possessed archives of the history of the before-times, the Yester was quickly elevated into the prestigious place of governing a runaway world.

It’s Tuesday morning, and now she knows she’s dying. Her head hurts, her vision swims, she can’t sleep at night, she just doesn’t care anymore. It’s either a transient ischemic attack, or she just really hates life right now. She’s banking on the first.

It’s Tuesday morning, and God, she wishes she was dead.

There’s just too many people in the world. Tuberculosis and ebola and dysentery and cholera running rampant, because there are so many people in such a small place. There’s not enough food, not enough medicine, not enough air to breathe without getting someone else’s last lungful. There’s not enough room and we are all going to die.

And the Yester! Where’s the Yester in the worse sectors? In Havoc where they sell hook and line and sinker like never before? In Rim where they are fighting off the No Ones that wander in from Nowhere? In Sack Town where there’s never any food and they end up eating people? In Alphabet City where homeless people sleep in piles on the cold concrete?

The Yester isn’t anywhere. It’s just a name anymore.
