Then Carter's hand comes out of nowhere and smashes the fairies out of the way. The fairy noise redoubles; the camera jolts wildly, and then you can finally see Carter surrounded by a cloud of

[A fairy gets right up in the camera and makes a bunch of rude gestures at Angua before Carter swipes it away.]

I can't get rid of 'em! Caught one doing something horrible to my shoes and when I squashed it, three more showed up. And the little buggers just keep coming!

And you don't suppose there's an object lesson to be had here, do you?

[Really, the object lesson is that there are lots of ways to inconvenience something without killing it. All the fairies that appear in her room are getting caught, tied up, and kicked out. But she's hoping he'll come up with something a little more moral, or just go crazy ignoring her and be sent home early or something.]

[It's going to take a long time before that lesson really sinks in, unfortunately, and a pack of fairies isn't quite going to do it.]

What kind of a-

[Carter's cut off in midsentence as a dozen or so fairies, as one, grab hold of his tie and pull. There's some kind of confused, blurred action as Carter is somehow dragged off camera. Much cursing and noises follow, and then Carter reappears, looking considerably the worse for wear.]

[ There's nothing in the frame except some askew furniture, but the only fairies visible are... off in fairy slumberland, apparently. Or something like it. ]

... I think you get more of them if you kill them. They just come back.

[The fairies on her side of the camera are reshelving books. Or trying, anyway.

She chatters something in the noises the fairies seem to be making into the camera at Carter's set. Something like 'can someone please tell me what the disagreement is here?']

[The fairies pretty much fall over themselves saying "HE'S A MASS MURDERER", or something to that effect. Carter almost can't get a word in edgewise.]

Can you make 'em go away then?

Well. You've killed several of their comrades, and they're as upset about that as any sentient species would be.

[She chirps to them something like "The ship is an prison for the ill-behaved. I have a safe room if you would like to bring your dead or injured"]

I believe continuing to kill them will only worsen the disagreement. Have you tried apologizing?
