Upon Further Research

I had heard that there would soon be a shortage or librarians. This is apparently some bogus rumor the ALA has concocted to flood the market which apparently means they get to pay librarians less and it's good for underfunded libraries. Now I have always had an interest in getting my masters in library science, but I also want to have a ( Read more... )

Well, another factor is whether or not their rumor will have their desired effect, especially considering it's a Master's degree I assume your desired job requires (which requires more investment of people).

There was a concern in the Computer Science field around when I started my degree. Tons of people were trying to get into the game to cash in. It petered out, though, as either people got bored or couldn't hack it, or whatnot.

Definitely bears some more research, though.

Yeah well I'd have to say that CS is probably a bit more challenging than Library Science. At any rate, I've been looking into it and discovered how many bitter new graduates are having problems finding jobs. And how seasoned librarians are competing with new grads for the same jobs because libraries can't afford to pay a decent wage. It sounds like the medical related library positions are the new hot thing, and I have zero desire to do that.

I probably just need to go find someone to talk to in the field about it.

Yeah, definitely talk to someone about it.

It may be that it works out by the time you would get your degree (such as if the glut of people starts to turn people off from getting their degrees).

From my GE perspective, Healthcare related document/knowledge management is huge... but yeah, not quite the same as being the little grey haired librarian.

Trying to figure all of this time out myself, half way through my masters and still not really clear if this is what I want to be doing. Something about the whole "mastering the subject" makes it feel less useful outside of that field, compared to when I didn't care what undergraduate degree I had, as long as I had one.

I do remember that the masters students at Sois all sounded like they were hoping to make $$ wise something compareable to what I started at with GE... and trust me, it's not like that is all that much...
