Amy and I discussed becoming a television-free household. We both watch quite a lot, and we have limited free time. I also feel like television, with its food commercials and utter lack of intellectual demands, contributes to my tendency to overeat and to crave foods that are a poor nutritional choice for me.

I haven't watched TV on a regular basis since 1997. It's awfully easy to live without. DVDs are another story.

We still have a drawer full of DVDs we've never watched, and for those occasional new releases (Futurama!), my two-discs-a-month Netflix membership for $5.43/month will do nicely. So I think DVDs will be an option, but I'm looking forward to spending my evenings with my wife and/or a book rather than in front of a screen.

Yep. It's nice. Anything you really want to see you can watch online or on DVD, but it's harder to just laze out in front of the screen. I probably actually watch something about once a week (but then I binge, by which I mean "watch the entire DVD.")

A lot of the movies I like are subtitled, so I have to pay careful attention or I don't get what's going on. That makes the whole experience more like going to the cinema, which I intend to continue to enjoy (perhaps even more often).

If you ever get desperate to catch a particular episode of a show, many are available on hulu.com or elsewhere. But I definitely don't watch that much TV because we don't have easy access to cable! (Spend too much time online, yes...)

I think that after a month or two, I'll simply forget that television programs exist. We'll see. :-)

That's what's happened for us. One gets a lot more particular about what one chooses to watch when it's not just getting piped into one's home 24 hours a day.

The monkey and I are so, so much happier without having a TV. Between DVDs and YouTube, we do fine.

Good for you! My husband and I did that too. What I really don't miss is the commercials.
