One of my reasons is that in a world where equal rights, ethnocentrism, and care for the environment are so totally fail, I would love to be part of trying to raise a person who isn't so bound by society's stupidity. In particular I would like to raise a little girl who feels empowered and not afraid.
I know it sounds dorky but I do think that would be really cool.
I've been trying to remember why I wanted to have my son, because it cost me big time in both practical and emotional ways- and that was before I carried him home! I fear if I am being honest, I wanted to have a child so I could have a family of my own. No husband, no father, but a mom and baby are a family. And we are, and it's wonderful, though harder in every possible way than I was anticipating.
I wasn't excpecting the autism- nor this conversation at the drug store, where he is reading Maxim magazine:
Me: Son, what are you doing reading that magazine? Him: The cover caught my attention. Me: I bet Him: Mom, will you buy me this magazine? Me: No. Get a job as a bag boy, then you can buy your own Maxim. Him: So does this mean Playboy is out of the question?
Yes, I did once. My mother firmly believed that the only people who had good reasons for having kids were aristocrats and farmers, so, not unexpectedly, she jumped on the question as another excuse for the "birth control isn't 100% effective but it's still better than nothing" lecture.
