Saturday morn i was greeted with the news of a tornado in NW NSW. George said, "Surely it was a cyclone? We don't get tornadoes in Australia, do we?" Look at that news footage...yep, big tornado ( Read more... )

That sink hole is freaky. Looks like aliens zapped us with a big laser beam from space! It was caused by neglected water and sewerage drainage, and isn't that uncommon in places with that sort of geology. Also, 'sinkhole' is not the correct technical term. Can't remember what the right one is, though.

That town hit by the tornado had damage from a big storm a year or so ago, apparently. And in another news report they pointed out that tornado season is starting up north. So not that uncommon either.

So don't worry, this sort of thing is normal... though I don't know how reassuring that really is!

We don't have any more disasters than we did (oil slicks notwithstanding) - we just have an enhanced capacity to have them thrust into our perception by ubiquitous news media and the internet.
