By way of gnostalgia. I question the validity of this to a degree, but it's interesting how many I bold when our family was in the lower end of middle class compared to at least a couple of the friends I envied. Yet definitely a bit higher in the economic strata than a number of my other friends ( Read more... )

I still have the same criticisms of it as before- all the questions regarding art and books aren't markers of class, and it annoys me when they're treated as such. Yes, they're "luxury" items in the sense that they're not food, heat or shelter, but even when we were dirt poor there was always music, and the library, and crayons and scrap paper.
You don't *need* money to access these things, and I know plenty of people who are below the poverty line who make them a priority. Labeling them as artifacts of privilege just reinforces an obnoxious stereotype.

(Oh, and if you want to know where any free museums are in New England, I guarantee you we got dragged there at least twice.)

Damn good points there. My parents made some of these things a priority to the exclusion of other stuff.

Yup yup. I qualified half of my statements with sentiments much the same.

I mean, taking music lessons in middle/high school that eventually lead to full-ride college scholarships isn't exactly...uppity, at least to me. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to go to school save for a huge student loan debt.
