HP Umpire Tim Tschida ejected Nationals pitcher Todd Coffey for arguing balls and strikes in the bottom of the 8th inning of the Nationals-Marlins game. With two out and two on, Marlins batter Gaby Sanchez hit a 0-1 fastball from Coffey to Nationals center fielder Rick Ankiel for a sacrifice fly, Chris Coghlan scoring. Please look at every at bat this inning. I counted at least 4 incorrect calls by Tschida when Coffey was pitching. This should be an incorrect call IMO.

Only the at bat immediately preceding ejection is routinely eligible for Quality of Correctness consideration (Rule 6.e.iii). See Rule 6.e.iv.b for information regarding Balls/Strikes Exemptions. This ejection is eligible for such an Exemption, but only if proper procedure to invoke said Exemption is followed, as specified by 6.e.iv.

Challenge: Quality of Correctness, requesting a Balls/Strikes Exemption under Rule 6.e.iv.b.

This ruling has been challenged.

After review, the Quality of Correctness has been overturned. The call is now incorrect.

Upon initial examination, the call appeared to be correct. The play immediately preceding the ejection (Sanchez sacrifice fly) appeared to have been correctly called.

Upon further examination, including examination of the replay and real-time play, the determination of overturning the original Quality of Correctness was made. Upon applying a Balls/Strikes Exemption under UEFL Rule 6.e.iv.b, it was evident that HP Umpire Tim Tschida appeared to have a 55% accuracy rating for the bottom of the 8th inning, Coffey pitching. Rule 6.e.iv has generally held that a Balls/Strikes Exemption may correctly apply and overturn a "Correct" call, if the HP Umpire's accuracy rating for the inning/partial inning in question is less than 66% (the average accuracy for Balls/Strikes ejections from 2007-2010).

Overturned.

Below are the pitch f/x plots for the bot. 8th Inning: Coffey pitching.

Inning Accuracy: 6 Correct, 5 ( ... )

Don't recall seeing Tim get that upset..He's usually very composed out on the field.

My thoughts exactly...Tim argues and dumps people in a very business like manner...I don't think I have ever seen him look like he does in the clip.

The AP reports "Coffey threw his glove after being ejected and went face to face with Tschida. "The situation dictates that I've got to be more composed and stay within myself and help the team," Coffey said, "and I didn't."

It's very annoying to an umpire when a relief pitcher, whose sitting on a chair 300 feet away for the 6-7 innings prior, comes in and decides to argue the strike zone.

Hence the "where have you been?" line.

"You can never have too much Coffey"

Well, Tim Tschida sure did.

I am sure Coffey got very personal. TT is a top tier guy. He was just calling a low zone all game

Never would have figured Tschida would be #1. Idea for next year: bonus points to whoever guesses the ump who has the first ejection. Haha.
