Campos, Meals anonymous April 17 2011, 11:45:49 UTC
Because There was already a MILB ump, Vic Carapazza umpiring on the Layne crew, and theynonly want one at a time.

Although Campos is a good umpire, and IMO, should have gotten one of the fulltime slots this year, there is no way MLB sends what is technically a "fill in" guy to THAT crew...think about it, you would have Campos, Wendelstedt, Davidson, and Knight, a first year hire. You hafta have one "adult" on the crew, even if it is Meals....I'm just sayin'.

Probably so they can have another #2 available to break up the arguments when Bob and/or pulls their shenanigans

Jerry Meals could be training for the next round of crew chief promotions. Somehow I don't think they would entrust those duties to Davidson or Hunter.

There could be some more crew chief openings coming up. Joe West and Derryl Cousins have 33 and 32 years in respectively, so it's getting to be about that time for them.

But I would think you would see guys like Wally Bell, Angel Hernandez, Larry Vanover, even Brian O'Nora, or Ted Barrett considered before you would see Jerry Meals. And that's assuming that Jim Joyce continues to not want it, which it doesn't seem like he does, for whatever reason.

Yeah, but if a rookie could somehow manage to get through a series carrying Wendlestadt AND Davidson without the roof falling on him too, the kid will make one hell of an umpire.
