I don't have a horse in this race.. but a missed first pitch CAN and WILL "have a realistic effect on the outcome of this at bat". That is very short sighted... Hitters hit a much lower number when behind in the count. While there is no predetermined outcome... Calling the first pitch a strike (when it should be a ball) does lead to a batter swinging at a pitch he could normally let go to make the count 1-1.

it's a very fair comment...and i agree. i think its something that should be discussed with the league rules. if a pitch is missed at all in an at bat, and the ejection occurs following (i.e. between innings if its the 3rd out), its pretty clear what is being contested.

I'm pretty sure it was not just about one pitch anonymous April 22 2011, 11:23:17 UTC
AJ has earned his reputation as being one big pain in an umpire's (fill in the blank). And on rare occasions when he's not trying to umpire as well as play, his manager is likely to pick up the slack. No wonder umpires have a quick trigger in ejecting both of them.
