IV: The Letter
The chills wore off as I walked home. Out of those dark shadows, it was easier to believe that Kira was just a hoax, a cruel joke played by someone with too much information and too much time on their hands.
My mission seemed clear enough-just find the one who was sending the letters and I’d find the one claiming to be Kira. Then I’d collect my final paycheck and put the boy’s mind at ease at the same time. Simple.
I arrived at my office at the same time as the postman. I ignored his small talk as he handed me the mail. It was the usual assortment of overdue bills and unwanted ads for things I couldn’t afford, plus one extra, unusual-looking letter. My address was typewritten on the front, and there was a stamp, but other than that the envelope was blank. There was no indication who it was from or what it was regarding.
“Did anyone give you anything to give to me?” I asked the postman. He said no.
I opened the letter. All it contained was a single sheet of paper with four typewritten lines. The name: “Kurou Otaharada.” The title: “The BB Serial Killer.” Today’s date followed by “9:07AM.” And, finally, the signature: “-Kira.”
The paper dropped from my hands. I checked the post date on the envelope-two days ago.
The postman asked if I was all right. I ignored him and rushed into my office. Watari was growling at the phone, which was ringing. I shooed him away and picked up the phone.
“Hello?”
“L! Where the hell were you? I’ve been trying to reach you for hours!” It was Chief Yagami. I already knew what he was going to tell me.
