hey i have a question, probly robbie, but when i get back to tucson im gonna try to get a laptop and a computer running off of the same modem... i want the quickest cheepest way, do i have to have a router???? or is there some sort of splitter type device that would allow me to just plug two chords in (one to the computer, one into the laptop) and ( Read more... )

its not dumb at all, Now i assume you are talking about connecting via broadband? now in that case you will no doubt need a router, but if you already have one, and only want one line going in to the router , and that one line control both the lap top and computer, i would duggest a HUB, as this will manage, and control your lines.. But other then that, im still not to quite sure what you want.

ok... its through cable, ive got the cable chord going to the modem or ''surfboard'' thing. then ive got the phone jack going from the modem to the computer... could i just use a hub??

Oh, so you want your phone line to conenct straight to the cable line?

SO you have a phone line connected to your computer, and you want that phone line to connect to the cable, with no router?? im still kinda lost.. sorry

ok... the cable connects to a cable modem box. then from the modem box it goes into the computer using a phone chord. i want to know if i can just use a hub to spit up that 1 chord into two, so one goes to the computer, and one goes to the laptop. make sense, baisically, im wondering would a hub work instead of having to buy an expensive router??
