My decisions, at least when it comes to work, are a combination of instinct and planning; the rest of my life is nothing more than habit and happenstance.
As a general rule, I tend to put more effort into my work than my personal life. I always say that acting, when I stumbled into it, saved my life, so I work like a motherfucker to do it up right. Through planning and my instincts, it's worked out pretty well, but I have to keep at it or it'll slip away from me.
By contrast, the rest of my life--friends, family, lovers, vacations, etc.--follows a pretty routine path, as it always has for me. I don't really have to work too hard at it because it just fixes itself whenever there's a problem. Habit and happenstance and pure dumb luck.
I had a big moment in my life where I wasn't sure about what I was doing or why I was doing it. I was 17 and in the forth season of Alex Mack. I had an existential crisis and decided I needed to be a "normal" teen, or whatever that means.
And now, at 22, I don't regret it one bit. It's good to make big, life changing decisions and question everything.
And by the way, I make fabulous veggie fajitas. You should try them sometime...

Why do you think the two vary so much for you?

I'm trying hard to break the pattern, habit and happenstance don't seem to be working too well for me.
