If you take the GRE, you at least have the option to apply at some point. I think it's better to just do it, and then figure out the rest.

Plus your results are good for a certain number of years. Might as well take it while stuff is fresh-ish.

It can't hurt to take it, can it? Unless you suddenly decide to become one of those people who studies obsessively for standardized tests in which case... well, just don't be like that.
