You've had a lot to cope with, he knows this and if he had any decency he would respect that, going over your head to your family is low and disgusting, regardless of the situation, you are adults and your issues are your own business.
Personally, unless there was any documentation regarding you owing him money, I would tell him to go fuck himself -although that could be more trouble than it is worth- the flat was in his name wasn't it? I'd bet he wasn't legally allowed to sublet, and if he expected you to be paying him it should have been agreed and set in writing. But then that's all bollocks really isn't it, because that isn't the root of the problem.
Give me a call, I've been in the bastard ex fiancee place, and I know it's not nice at all, if you are feeling anything like I was then you should know you can offload on me anytime you like.

How dare does he act likes a schoolboy? i'm going to tell your mommy that you hurt me, and you're gonna get punished, ah! worthy of a 12 years-old. I'm just glad I was never friend with him, so I can yell, and bitch about how much an arse he is.
Do you still have his parents address? send it there. Maybe they'll want to know he get his money by emotionnaly blackmailaing.
