Help Me, Internets - with Science Fiction

I know there are folks out there whose knowledge of science fiction is much greater (or more recent) than mine, so I'm hoping people can suggest some resources here.

I highly recommend The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell. Several different layers of ethics at work in this, including inadvertently interfering with an alien culture and the ramifications derived from same. Well-written, gripping story. Much more recent (1980s or 1990s, if memory serves) so not much help on the "History of Space Ethics" side. Warning; not a very happy ending, but well worth reading.

When read about this post, the first thing it made me think of is a short story called "The Cold Equations" by Tom Godwin. It was first published in 1954. The full text is online here.
