I read a review by Ursula Le Guin that compared Ariel's adventures to a computer game, which makes a lot of sense. I never thought of it that way because I don't play computer games.
And I did like the ending-ending of the book - very allegorical and poetic. I just thought that having you-know-who magically turn up a bit before the ending was very deus-ex-machina-like.

Agreed about the DEM bit, but really, I wasn't sure how else it could come out so I accepted it anyway.

The Le Guin review is here. I disagree with her comments on the heroine, whom she calls 'whiny' - I found her a very sympathetic character. In fact, I probably identified with her too much.
