Of mice and punctured skin

Sep 03, 2008 21:17

Tonight Gershwin (one of our American cats) brought in a mouse, and it was alive and scurrying around the front room, and ... I just grabbed it. It immediately sank its teeth into my thumb. I then managed to detach my thumb and set the mouse free in the neighbor's garden. Unfortunately I can't remember whether I had a tetanus booster when I was ( Read more... )

The End of Mr Y is fantastic, isn't it?

Oh good, I'm glad you liked it! I haven't met anyone else who has read it yet. I did think it was pretty marvellous. It was long-listed for the Orange Prize, and I read the books short-listed for the Orange Prize and liked it better than any of them.

I read a review by Ursula Le Guin that compared Ariel's adventures to a computer game, which makes a lot of sense. I never thought of it that way because I don't play computer games.

And I did like the ending-ending of the book - very allegorical and poetic. I just thought that having you-know-who magically turn up a bit before the ending was very deus-ex-machina-like.

Computer game - yes! Absolutely! I kept wanting to step in and tweak things a bit so that they went the way I wanted them to go, which is always a good sign, for me. (UleG's books do that for me too, as well as Diana Wynne Jones's.) I was immersed in that world and I never wanted it to come to an end.

Agreed about the DEM bit, but really, I wasn't sure how else it could come out so I accepted it anyway.

I think I should have another go at Diana Wynne Jones. I dipped into her books a little before and wasn't immediately hooked, but that was a long time ago now.

The Le Guin review is here. I disagree with her comments on the heroine, whom she calls 'whiny' - I found her a very sympathetic character. In fact, I probably identified with her too much.

You are BAD ASS with the barehanded mice-catching and the snatching of ungrateful rodents from the very maw of Death Itself. I fangirl you like whoa!

Will Charlie get to watch you have your tetanus jab?

Oh wow, thanks, no one has ever fangirled me before!

It would have been a satisfying experience for Charlie, I'm sure, but I did the convenient thing and left him at nursery.

Oooh I've seen The End of Mr Y around the place and been tempted but I haven't pick it up yet!

Also you caught a mouse with your bare hands - that's ... really terrifying! :)

I'm scared of plenty of things but not small critters. You wouldn't believe how many things we used to catch outside while we were growing up and tried to torture raise in small tanks (with my mother's approval, WTF?). It was part of the homeschool ethos.
