Of rain and holidays

Sep 05, 2008 12:01

We are about to go to Paris for 5 days. I can't quite believe we got our act together to book a holiday. We kept talking about Cassis in the south of France (our favorite destination), but knew we couldn't really afford it this year, and then we thought of just going somewhere on the English coast, but the weather has been so depressing that ( Read more... )

Wow, that apartment looks sweet! We've stayed at really cheap, crap hotels when we've been in Paris, which possibly contributes to my annoyance with the city :)

Have a great trip!

Thanks! We always used to stay in hotels too, until last year when we finally clued in to the apartment-renting thing, and it was so good I don't think we'll ever go back to hotels again. It's so much more practical with a kid.

In other parts of France, you can find apartments to rent much more cheaply. But it helps if you own or can rent a car. We are usually lazy and depend on public transport.

We did rent a car, but we never found any real cheap deals on apts. I mean, when I say cheap, I mean we stayed at BOXES cheap. Because we were gone for 2 months almost (7 weeks) so we had to stretch to have enough money to cover it all...

To be honest, my mentality would be to go for a longer period of time and 'rough it' a bit more, but M loves his bourgeois amenities, and would rather have a short, luxurious holiday. It drives me crazy sometimes, but the luxury part of it is certainly nice, so I go with it!

Have fun in Paris. We went in April, and my jeans definitely felt a bit looser when we got back - I put it down to lots of walking and no eating between meals, even though the meals were generally quite substantial!

Oh, you actually DID lose weight in Paris? That's quite a coup! The not eating between meals, and then enjoying long leisurely ones when you do eat, is very French. I think it's unlikely to happen in my case though; I'm an inveterate snacker.

I should hunt back in your journal to see what you did on the Paris trip. Except that I am about to get off the internet RIGHT NOW and go do some work. Yes.

Ooh, lovely! Evan and I went to London when I was pregnant with Blue, and took a short side trip to Paris to visit Shakespeare and Company where Evan had stayed for a time when he was young. We didn't do much else besides hang out at Shakespeare & Co which was an absolute treat. But I'd love to go back and do more. I hope you have time to write about your trip so we can live vicariously through you!

That is fascinating that Evan stayed at Shakespeare and Co! Didn't a book come out recently about the history of that bookshop?

I never frequented it much when I lived in Paris because the books were just so expensive (like all English books in Paris) but I know the place is a legend.

I don't know, I haven't seen a book, but for a while there was a website from some people who were going to make a movie, and now that site is down. I'm sad because I would love to have a film about it! Yes, it is a legend, and it was great fun to spend several days hanging out there. We even got to go up to George's apartment for a pancake breakfast--he makes the syrup with brown sugar--and I washed his pots elbow to elbow with him as he cooked a dinner stew. He was always an eccentric, and is quite off these days but at the same time he was very charming and kind to me. He invited us to stay in the "couples suite" but I was pregnant and not feeling like sleeping on a blanket-covered board with possible bedbugs. Although maybe we should have as we had a hard time finding a decent hotel in Paris. I am going to check out that website you gave if we ever have occasion to come back.

P.S. Not only did Evan stay there for quite some time as a 19-year-old coming back from a semester abroad in Belgium, but we recently found out that Evan's father had stayed there too, once upon a time! :D

Yay for Paris! Let's hope the weather is good. I don't know how but somehow I always loose weight in Paris as well. One eats like mad, but walks everywhere and the coffee probably helps. Have a wonderful time! I've never really explored the area round Villers in the 17th but it looks lovely. Would really like to rent a flat next time I'm going.

Ah yes, the coffee...

You are probably the biggest Paris fan on my friends-list. :)

The 17th is good; we've stayed there before, and it's near the Parc Monceau, which is a great place to hang out with Charlie. And yes, having a flat is good, but again, the main motivation for that was Charlie! With a little kid your options are much more limited, so it's important to have a base you can come back to in order to make boring kid meals.

I kind of miss the old, freer days, but going to Paris as a parent is still pretty amazing.
