I am getting into a deliriously happy 'OMG we are going to Paris!' frame of mind. I'm not bringing any work with me, I swear. It's only 4 nights; surely I can stave off my superego for that long. (My normal procedure is to drag tons of research-related books and notes along with me on holiday, and never look at them the whole time

Very belatedly and selfishly - was the Barbery novel any good? I picked it up the other day and looked at it and then put it down again in an unconvinced way.

Oh dear, I'm not going to be able to write a short answer to this question (although I'm delighted to have been asked it!). My reaction was mixed. In many ways, I loved it. It's a very French novel - it would certainly not become a bestseller in any Anglophone country - and the things that are annoying about it are also the things that are perhaps most French
