This eternal twilight

I don't know how people managed to flourish in this country in previous centuries. It's so dark and damp and sunless. I took Charlie out to the natural history museum this morning, and the light (or lack thereof) felt like late afternoon. I'm actually grateful for all of the absurdly early Christmas merchandise in the shops, because it is bright ( Read more... )

Or even further north - when I went to a conference in the north of Sweden in December I came back and went 'Woooooo! 2 in the afternoon, and still light!' and was positively Fotherington-Tomas, since in Umea it got sort of twilight about 9.30 am and went completely dark at about 1 pm. The University Hospital has an enormous suite where people could sit in bright light against SAD.

I've never wintered further north than Durham but I was in Torridon in June once. It never really got dark.
