everyone is always talking about it and i have NO idea, lol.

It's a book series and it's awesome. It's three books technically aimed at teens but, they're still pretty awesome. The premise: set in a post-apocalypse America, the all-powerful Capitol forces the 12 subjugated districts of Panem to offer up to 12-18 year olds every year for a televised fight to the death for the entertainment of the Capitol and the further dehumanization of the districts. Katniss, the protagonist, volunteers to be one of the tributes in The Games, as they're called, in order to save her 12 year old sister from be taken when her name is randomly chosen by the Capitol. The three books chronicle Katniss' experiences and her sort of coming of age story as she finds and accepts the role that she will play in her society, or whatever may become of it.

Also there's a love triangle and a drunken mentor and other awesome things.

Huh. Sounds a bit like Battle Royale?

I just wikipedia Battle Royale because I didn't know about it, but yeah, it's very similar in some ways but it varies a bit. Like in the Hunger Games, there's a clear parallel made between the way the Captiol treats the Games and the way the way people currently relate to reality tv. Every moment of the Games is filmed and broadcast to Panem and everything is sort of engineered to the maximum entertainment value. And before the Games start the Capitol hosts an opening ceremony and interviews all the tributes so that the Capitol audience can "get to know the competitors." And some of the kids actually willingly volunteer to go in to the Games because they want the glory and the prizes. So, it's still really similar but there are differences. Plus, the first book of the Hunger Games chronicles the entirety of the games Katniss is in, so the story seems to continue further beyond the arena than Battle Royale does (at least if the wiki summary is trustworthy).

I KNOW I AM SO PUMPED. I JUST DOWNLOADED A BUNCH OF VERSIONS OF SCREENCAPS OF THE TRAILER AND THIS MOVIE LOOKS SOOO PRETTY AND SO TRUE TO THE BOOK AND - JUST - YES. I CAN'T WAIT FOR EVERYONE TO ICON THIS THING.
