So, I have about a million other things I need to be writing (both school- and fic-related) annnnd somehow people end up making me have a ton of feelings about Cato/Clove and I check out the ficathon and this happens. Welp. Written for the prompt "watch it you're in the danger zone" by jada_jasmine at  The Girl on Fire Ficathon. Originally posted  here.

Oh my god Cato/Clove. Watching the movie reminded me of all my feelings for them though I read the first book so long ago I could barely remember Cato's name at all. I have such a craving for C/C fic, and then I found THIS stunning thing.

I particularly liked that they didn't know each other well beforehand, that their bond is forged all in fighting and battle. That's such a testament to what they are, the restrictions to what their bond can bring, and yet I'm struck by the fact that they sleep side-by-side unguarded even knowing that the other one has homicidal thoughts.

I love how you showed that violence is the only way they know how to show love--this is the only way they could be--and death and mercy and beauty are things they can't separate. It's like this promise that this huge part of their lives (how it ends) will belong to the other one, and no one else, because that is the best thing they can give each other except life (and they wouldn't expect the other to give that

Oh gosh, I was exactly the same! I hadn't read the first book in a few years when I saw the movie, and then it all came back to me, especially since there seemed to be such a new rush for these two everywhere; I couldn't resist! Thank you so much though, I'm so flattered and happy that you enjoyed this, I've always been super nervous about writing THG fic of any kind. But UGH, everything you're saying about them too, this is giving me feelings all over again! I do find it so fascinating to have even the slightest bit of trust, enough to band up together, in a game where you know you can't both make it out alive, eventually one of you is going to have to kill the other one. How DID they manage to sleep at night with that hanging over them? But anyway, before I go off an ramble, lol, thank you so much again for the lovely comment! ♥

“I’m saving you till the very end,” he counters, but his voice rasps over the words and all he hears is I’m saving you and all he wants to know is why? He fumbles for reasons that get trapped behind flashes of wrists snap knife silver teeth. This is so fucking important to to their relationship, like the fact that I'm saving you is the part he hears pretty much sums up Cato/Clove. He isn't sure why she matters so much. He doesn't want her to. BUT SHE DOES, and omg you got that with this line.

“I promise I’ll kill you,” she says quietly, a second later, because clearly the girl doesn’t know how to drop anything. She’s like a dog with a bone. Wolf, he thinks, all teeth. I love that the 'I promise I'll kill you' captures both sides of Clove, how dark and dangerous and wolflike she is, but also the fact that she's promising him something, doing this for him. THAT IS SO GREAT.

And then the entire section where he dreams he's fucking her is so painful and vivid, omg.
