Michelle Milton stared at her computer screen, not really seeing it. She had her elbows on the office desk, her chin resting on the heel of one hand. She was supposed to be finishing a thesis, but she couldn't concentrate.
She was just beginning to slip into a daydream when a rough voice interupted the soon to be embarrassing thoughts. "You never called me, made me feel kinda dirty."
Perched on the edge of her swivel chair as she was, and almost asleep, she jumped and fell. She hit her head on the desk, choking otu a 'Fuck!' for good measure. She stared up at the white ceiling, as the stars slowly disappeared. She turned her head paralel to the floor, looking at a concerned Dr. Jacob Glaser.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
"I met this girl," he began, tilting his head. "She was actually real, not some plastic, fake, over done brat in heels. She was very interesting and smart. She believed me when I said there was a robot head on the moon," Michelle forced herself to sit up, rubbing her head. Jacob took her hand, pulling her up and against him.
He was too close for comfort.
The reclusive scientist attempted to squirm away, but he was stronger. "I'm checking your head, I think you hit it on the way down," he murmured, stilling her with just one hand. "Mm, no blood..."
"It's fine," she swatted at his hands, finally managing to twist out of his grip. She glared at him over her shoulder as she unlocked her file cabinet, fishing around for somethign. She pulled out a bottle of Excedrin Migraine. "Tell me more about this girl."
"She's pretty," he admitted, leaning against her desk. "I only got to talk to her for about a half hour, never even got her last name. Then, I read an article in the paper about Anna Milton and her younger sister, Michelle." Michelle tilted her head, sliding into her chair and propping her feet on the desk.
"Oh?"
"Mhm,so I checked a phone book."
"People still use those?"
"Apparently." she smiled slightly, watching him. His blue eyes looked straight into her, then into her soul. She turned her head away, eyes trained on the small glass container on the desk. "You know, a year ago, I was scared to even face a man like you."
"Like me?"
"Handsome, full of... character."
"Is that a compliment?"
"Of course it is," she leaned forward, opening the box and pulling out an engagement ring. The rock was medium sized, and blue. A sapphire.
"That's beautiful," he muttered, pushing away from the desk. He ran a hand through his unruly black hair, blue eyes slightly let down. "He's a lucky guy."
"Yeah, and I'm sure his mistress is a lucky girl." she turned her chair to look at him. "I caught him cheating on me, the night before the wedding. He left me, said I wouldn't put up before so..."
"He left you for not sleeping with him?" Michelle nodded, waiting for the man in front of her to say he would too. "Tch, dumbass."
"Huh?"
"If you love someone," he looked down at her. Her pale pink lips were parted slightly, and her green eyes confused. "You should be able to wait for her."
"Whoever has you, is a lucky girl..." she whispered, looking down at the ring.
"Well, I'm hoping she thinks so."
"Shelley! It's karaoke time!" someone yelled from outside the door. She flushed with embarrassment, mouth gaping.
"You sing?"
"I-I... yes," she mumbled, sounding defeated as she stood up. "Coming, Anna!"
"Can I stick around?" Jacob asked, blue eyes mischevious.
"You're evil," she glared, pushing through the door. The smirking scientist followed, flopping down into a chair next to Anna.
"Not evil, just..."
"Insane." Anna piped up, maknig Jacob roll his eyes.
"You're just mad that he chose my brother over you," Michelle looked up at them, confused.
"Michelle, it's your turn." Anna continued glaring at Jacob, pointing at the mini-stage.
