Cheers

A loaf of bread, a jug of wine, and thou.
“You lost the bet, plain and simple,” Dorian said as the Major grudgingly took a seat.
“You cheated,” the Major replied. “But I am a man of my word, so I’m here.”
Dorian gave him a dazzling smile. “A matter of honor, of course.”
The Major just glared. He watched in silence as the Earl placed two gold goblets on the table, going on to pour a generous amount a wine into each.
“Cheers,” Dorian said, picking up his goblet.
It wasn’t until he had the golden object in his hand that the Major realized what it was and he snatched his hand away. “What the hell…?” He looked up in horror. “That’s a chalice!”
“So it is, Major. You have a good eye.”
“You bloody thief! You know I’m Catholic, so you serve me wine in a holy vessel! Must you defile everything?
Dorian gave a light laugh. “Major, you’re such a dichotomy. How can you be a devout Catholic and an atheist at the same time?”
“You really are a man of pure malice, aren’t you?”
“We both are,” the Earl replied airily. “Perhaps next time you’ll think twice before you try to pull something on me.”
The Major’s eyes narrowed. “You can’t still be upset about Iran after all this time.”
“No, I’m thinking of a bit more recently. The anonymous tip about a missing Vermeer… Interpol waiting at the door,” Dorian said accusingly. “Any of this ringing a bell?”
Klaus sat back, his eyes wide. “Someone set you up?” he observed. Someone other than me? He found himself annoyed when he realized the thought of someone else manipulating the Earl irritated him.
The Earl rolled his eyes, setting his goblet down at the same time. “Don’t pretend with me, Major. I know it was you.”
“Not this time.”
Dorian gave an indignant snort. “As if you’d admit it.”
Klaus felt himself getting angry. “When was this?” he demanded. He listened in silence as the Earl gave him the specifics. He did not even realize he was drinking the wine from the object he had objected to only a few minutes earlier until after his second glass. Then it was too late to worry about it.
Finally, he got to his feet. “Thank you for the wine, Lord Gloria,” the officer said calmly.
“Major.”
“I will find out who set you up,” the Major said before he turned and strode off.
The Earl sat back in his chair, picking up his goblet. “You do that, Major,” he purred. “You just do that.”
