The Major shifted position in a vain attempt to get comfortable in the cramped space he had been crammed into. After years of failed attempts, it seemed that Iron Klaus was actually going to Moscow, care of the KGB. He had no doubt that Mischa the Cub would be gloating when he arrived.
Everything on this mission had gone well, Klaus reflected, until he was captured, that is. After a brief exchange of unpleasantries with the KGB, he had been secured with body chains, blindfolded, gagged, and then loaded into the trunk of a car.
Klaus wasn’t sure how long he bounced around in the back of the vehicle. He suspected that the driver was going out of his way to hit every bump in the road. Then the car came to an abrupt halt. He wondered if they had crossed into East Germany, going on to wonder if he would be removed from the trunk for the remainder of the journey.
That was when he realized that something entirely different had brought the car to a stop when he heard raised voices followed by gunfire. The car lurched forward and then swerved violently, bouncing the Major around even more, and adding to his bruises in an apparent attempt to escape. This was followed by a bone jarring jolt that Klaus realized was another car ramming into the one in which he was trapped. This was enough to halt the car for good.
Again, there was an exchange of gunfire. Finally, there was only the sound of raised voices.
Uncertain as to the outcome, Klaus waited. He jumped when there was suddenly someone pounding on the metal above his head. This was followed by Agent A’s voice. “Major?!”
Klaus kicked out hard to make some kind of noise.
“He’s here!” A called out.
Klaus heard keys in the lock, followed by curses, which he mentally added to when he heard A say, “It’s jammed.”
To the trapped officer’s horror, he heard Eroica reply, “Let me have a go.”
Even the thief seemed to have some difficulty and Klaus wondered if the impact had jammed the trunk closed.
Fuck. They’re gonna need a crowbar.
Finally, there was a pop, followed by the Earl’s delighted cry. The trunk opened and the Major groaned inwardly upon hearing Eroica’s sharp intake of breath. He did not have to be able to see him to know the expression that would be on his face. This was verified when the blindfold was pulled off and he found himself looking up into the man’s large, surprised eyes. He braced himself for the litany of perverted comments about his position--and his inability to reply to them--that he could see on the tip of the Earl’s tongue.
To the Major’s amazement, Eroica said none of the things that were obviously still flashing through his mind. Instead, the Earl recovered his composure and became serious. “Just stay still, Major. I’ll have you out of those in two shakes.” He put the pick that was in his hand back in his case of burglar tools, selecting the appropriate one he needed. He made quick work of the cuffs at the Major’s hands, which allowed him to move enough to give the thief access to his ankles.
In less than a minute, the Major was climbing out of the trunk, pulling the gag from his mouth at the same time. Unfortunately, because he had been in the same cramped position for so long, his legs had gone to sleep. His knees gave way when he tried to stand. Eroica caught him automatically.
“Careful, Major,” Eroica said gently. “It wouldn’t do for you to collapse in front of the KGB.”
Klaus gave the thief a steady look but did not reply, being too busy gritting his teeth against the pain of pins and needles stabbing at his legs.
Eroica turned his gaze to the activity of the Major’s Alphabet who were in the process of loading the KGB agents into various undamaged vehicles. When Agent Z came over to relieve him of the duty of looking after the Major, he relinquished his support position and returned to his men, who had been waiting impatiently for him.
Eroica threw a quick glance over his shoulder before getting into the car. No one even noticed when he and his men disappeared.
Or so he thought.
Then the package arrived at Castle Gloria containing the body chains. A smile played at the edges of his mouth as he read the note that accompanied the package that began, “You left so quickly, you overlooked stealing these…”
The smile turned into a laugh as the Earl read on, and he found himself reaching for the phone to ring up the Major. It was about time for another liaison. And he agreed with his lover that he could put his present to a much better use than the KGB.
