[Application] Join the crazy [OLD]

ATTENTION: THIS IS THE OLD APPLICATIONS POST. THE NEW ONE IS HERE.

So you think you're ready to apply for a character now? Great :O Some points to note before you get started:

  • Be sure to look at the taken characters and reserved characters to make sure the character you're planning on applying for isn't already taken.
  • If you need ideas, feel free to look through the requested characters to see who the other players here want.
  • Be sure to fill out the app form completely, and in enough depth that we can see you know the character and are able to write them. The background and personality sections, for example, don't have to be novel-length-- they can be if you want or need them to be, but they can be fairly short as well as long as you make sure to get all the major points of the character across.
  • The sample post required for the app can be in either first or third person, because we allow both. Use whichever format you prefer, just make sure it's long enough to get your character's personality across either way.
  • Remember! We will only accept characters age ten and over, and players age thirteen and over.
  • Once you're finished with your application, post it as a reply to this post. Once you've done that, you'll have to wait several days for the mods to make a decision on your application, so please be patient.
  • And most importantly, READ THE RULES.

What we are looking for in the apps:

We're not looking for novels, but we're also looking for enough depth that we can tell that you know how the character works and how you will play the character. Here are some guidelines for sections that seem to have caused the most problems in some applications.

[Background]

Two-three well developed paragraphs is recommended. We don't need their whole life history but a good summary that includes the major important details should be given. Note, this is not meant to be a plot summary of the canon but of the character. Of course if the character you are applying for is the main character and therefore affects the main storyline that's understandable. But be sure to focus on what happens with the character. (giving both is also fine but not necessary) Don't worry about giving away spoilers, this is absolutely fine.

[Personality]

This will vary between characters, and the minimum should be about one well developed paragraph. However, we highly encourage appers to probe deep into the character's mind and lay out not only the fundamentals but also what makes the character unique. Their quirks, habits, opinions, philosophies...take all those things into account.

[Abilities]

This is a wild card as not all characters will have super powers. But abilities can vary more than just powers or strength. A suggestion for normal human characters would be what are they good at? Are they good at judging people? Giving advice? Some of this may be pointed out in the Personality or Background sections, but do not hesitate to restate them here.

For those who do have super powers/skills, please give a decent sized description of what they can do. We don't need a list of every thing, but some general details. Do they use magic spells? If so what are some examples or the range of elements? Will they need to be limited, ie., will the game setting affect them in any way? Can they wield weapons and will they have them with them?

[Sample Post]

It should be noted that we accept either first person or third person. However, sometimes it is better to write a sample in one point of view over the other. For example, it would be more beneficial if a silent type character is written from the third person point of view as they probably would not have a lot of dialogue in first person. While just have dots and actions tags are perfectly fine in the RP itself, we can't accept that in the actual sample. We need to see how you will be able to portray the character and that won't really cut it :\ If all the character will do is just action, third person would be a lot better. There is nothing wrong with having a third person sample that is just narrative with no dialogue.

As for the length, we need enough to see how you can play the character. Have them move around a bit, explore, muse. Something sufficient so that we can see the character in action. Use this chance to show off how well you can handle the character. The sample should be a good paragraph or two length, not just four lines. Look at some applications that have been accepted and go for a happy medium. Not sure what to write about? Look at the tips below.

Having problems with the sample post? Here are some suggestions:

Write a sample post regarding how the character reacts to any of the following:

- the floating castle
- the village in the middle of a city
- any of the creatures that could be seen, such as the scarecrows
- the Dreamberries that magically appear in their hands or in their pockets

You can also look at any of the other applicants to see what you need to do!
