[Background] [[Most of this background assumes that you're reasonably familiar with the Geass storyline. Spoilers are in abundance, but there would be far more (and like 8 more paragraphs, ffff) if I gave a full run-down of 'meanwhile, back at the ranch'-type goings-on, so if you get lost or want to know more, I recommend the Wikipedia aricle on Code Geass. =3]] Schneizel el Britannia is the second Prince of the Britannian Imperial Family, making him third in line after Odysseus U Britannia and Guinevere Su Britannia to inherit the throne. Among his siblings, he has always been known as the peacemaker, the genius, the ideal 'big brother,' friend and confidante. As a child, he was closest to the Second Princess, Cornelia, and the Eleventh Prince, Lelouch, though the very use of the word 'close' when speaking of the Imperial Family is, perhaps, not entirely accurate. Using his intelligence and skills as a great strategist, Schneizel worked his way upward through the ranks of both family and noblemen to achieve the position of Prime Minister of the Holy Britannian Empire.
In the series, we don't see much of Schneizel until episode 18 of season 1, where he arrives in Japan in time to order an attack on Zero, locked in a stalemate with Suzaku Kururugi. Schneizel had come to Japan to investigate another in a series of newly-discovered ruins, whose locations (we learn) corresponded with the Emperor's pattern of conquest. He enlists the help of Cecile and Lloyd to investigate the ruins, but we soon learn this is merely an excuse--while honestly fascinated by the ruins, Schneizel really wants a chance to size up the situation in Area Eleven firsthand. He is responsible for keeping Suzaku from being court-martialed after losing Zero, and once again plays big brother to Euphie, subtly encouraging her idea of the Special Administative Region of Japan. After its announcement at the Ashford Festival, Schneizel returns to Pendragon, the Britannian capital--but his stay is brief as Euphie makes her debut as the 'Massacre Princess.' In the aftermath, Zero once again announces his plans to establish his own free zone of the United States of Japan, and the Imperial Family struggles to decide on a course of action without Charles' presence. Schneizel volunteers to return to Area Eleven with the Pacific Fleet to help Cornelia's battered forces restore order, and presumably does so.
The next we see of Schneizel, it's a year after that decisive battle. Area 11 is once more under Britannian control, and the mistreatment of the former Japanese is worse than ever. Schneizel himself is still leading Britannia's assault against the E.U., a war which he finally brings to an end, though not in the way anyone was expecting. Stating that 'conquest invites nothing but defeat' since it destroys hope, he arranges a peace treaty with the E.U., giving all but nominal control of its territories to Britannia. The war over in the West, Schneizel turns his attention to the East, attempting to bribe the Chinese Federation's Eunuch-Generals with titles of Britannian nobility if they agree to a political marriage between Odysseus U Britannia and their child Empress. His plan almost comes to fruition, but an intervention by both the Black Knights, and the Empress' own warrior Xingke turn things upside-down. The Empress falls into the hands of the Black Knights, Xingke allies himself with them for her sake, and after his deal with the Eunuch-Generals is revealed and the public revolts, Schneizel revokes his offer by noting that leaders who do not have the support of their people aren't leaders at all. This is only a minor setback, as Schneizel immediately commences efforts to annex the Federation's now-fragmented territories, taking the lead among his siblings. The rift between Schneizel and the Emperor grows more and more apparent, and a coup looms on the horizon as Nina (her research funded by Schneizel) completes a successful test of her new nuclear weapon, dubbed FLEIJA.
With FLEIJA equipped to Suzaku's Knightmare Frame, half of the Knights of Rounds are sent to Area 11 under Schneizel's command, to defend the territory from 'liberation' by the Black Knights, following Zero's newly created United Federation of Nations. While the battle rages between the Black Knights and the Britannian forces, Lelouch meets up with Suzaku, only to find that Schneizel has only used Suzaku to capture Zero. Realizing that Zero is in fact the brother he once cared for, Schneizel promises to intervene with their father to make sure he goes easy on Lelouch. However, whether or not this was simply another lie remains a mystery, as Lelouch escapes and returns to the battlefield. The fight seems to be more or less even until Suzaku's Geass activates, causing him to fire the FLEIJA warhead into the heart of the Towkyow Settlement, killing everyone inside--including the Governor: Lelouch's younger sister, Nunally. Schneizel, meanwhile, having learned about Geass from Suzaku, has arranged a meeting with the Black Knights leaders while Zero himself is out searching the wreckage for signs of Nunally. Informing them of Lelouch's true identity and his abilities, Schneizel convinces the Black Knights to turn him over in exchange for Japan. They agree, but Lelouch manages to escape yet again, this time to go after the Emperor himself. Schneizel decides that the Emperor is no longer fit to be Emperor, treating war and politics as a game and focusing instead on dangerous research, so strikes a deal with Suzaku: in exchange for making Suzaku Knight of One and granting him Japan as his personal territory, Suzaku will assassinate the Emperor, making Schneizel the new Emperor. Of course, things don't go according to plan, and with the Emperor dead, Lelouch claims the throne with Suzaku at his side. Schneizel, meanwhile, has taken his remaining Knights and joined forces with the Black Knights/U.F.N., and prepares for the last battle of wits between himself and Lelouch.
When Lelouch attempts to gain control of the U.F.N. by requesting they let Britannia join (as the largest country, Britannia would have the deciding vote and therefore control the Union), and uses their refusal as a pretext for attacking Japan and beginning his last hostile takeover, Schneizel reveals his trump card: he's launched a FLEIJA warhead and destroyed the Britannian capital, Pendragon. In the wake of this news, Schneizel contacts Lelouch and declares his refusal to acknowledge Lelouch as Emperor. Instead, he reveals the person he calls the 'rightful' successor to the throne--Nunally, previously thought dead in the FLEIJA blast that destroyed Towkyow. Broadcasting from Schneizel's aerial fortress, Damocles, Nunally declares herself the enemy of both Lelouch and Suzaku, and with Schneizel's aid vows to end their reign of terror. Of course, all but Nunally herself know that she is only a figurehead, and Schneizel's as-yet-unknown master plan is something far more sinister.
This plan, he reveals to one other person:his half-sister, Cornelia. His ultimate goal--to achieve world peace--he will reach through the simplest means possible: he will take the Damocles up to an orbit of 300 kilometres and fire FLEIJA warheads at any and all countries that insist on fighting. He will enforce peace through terror. The sacrifice of one or two billion is a small price to pay, and if he must become a God to achieve this, so be it. When she shows outrage at his plan and draws her sword, he has her gunned down.
[Personality]Schneizel is the very essence of noblesse oblige. Charismatic, kind, sympathetic, the ideal commanding officer, he shows concern for his subordinates and garners the kind of loyalty most can only dream of acquiring. A strategist and military commander of some renown, he shows considerable skill on the battlefield, but his true talents lie in diplomacy. Schneizel is more or less solely responsible for the growing influence of Britannia across the Western Hemisphere. He is polite, well-mannered, charming...and as cold-blooded as a snake. Schneizel will not hesitate to use a person until they no longer serve his purposes, then discard them without a second thought. He is a man of many faces, and it's anyone's guess which one of them is his true self. Prince, idealist, megalomaniac, brother, or perhaps all of the above? Each of these things is something of what he is, without really coming close to summing up the whole. He follows his own particular code of honor, and doesn't seem to pay much regard to the contradicting nature of his actions; everything he does is done for a reason, albeit a reason unknown.
[Specialties/Abilities] being smarter than you kicking Lulu's ass at chess being an insufferably poncy git Schneizel is incredibly intelligent, a skilled diplomat and tactician. He is charismatic and knows just how to use that to his adantage, having a talent for knowing just the right things to say to guide people towards behaving as he wants them to. He's fit enough, physically, and skilled in combat (though perhaps not as skilled as his half-sister, Cornelia), but his real abilities lie in strategy and diplomacy, and using other people as we might use our arms or legs. Command is in his blood, after all.
[Affection] Schneizel is not what one would consider an affectionate person. He is warm, sympathetic, caring, but always a little distant. Even to those closest to him, the chances of anyone really knowing how he feels are very slim. Those people he once felt closest to are more or less gone now, leaving him more closed off than ever--if one wanted to get close to him, they would have to get through the multitude of masks he wears. Schneizel is very well-bred and has manners befitting his station; expressing any sort of physical affection is unheard-of (though he is not above using a subtle touch or two to better manipulate--I mean, understand--a person).
[Fighting] Schneizel is trained in classical combat, both fisticuffs and fencing as it were, but his true talents lie elsewhere. He is a skilled tactician and diplomat, and would much rather use words than weapons to solve a conflict. This isn't to say he's a pushover; he can hold his own when it comes to a fight. He'd just rather not dirty his hands. Physical combat--the stereotypical tavern brawl--is below someone of his status.
[Other Facts] Loves chess. I mean REALLY loves chess. And cravats. And floating fortresses.
