Turlough really does say, "We need to get off!" near the end of one of the Enlightenment episodes. Here's a ficlet based on that comment.
Standing next to the Doctor on the deck of the Edwardian ship, Turlough fidgeted and twitched. He was supposed to be concentrating on the rival ship, the Buccaneer, but the weight of the Black Guardian's orders was too much to bear. He didn't want to obey but didn't dare refuse. In an agony of confusion, he turned to the Doctor and cried, "We need to get off!"
Through the faceplate of his space helmet, the Doctor eyed his companion in a considering manner. Turlough could only imagine how he looked: visibly upset, the veins standing out on his forehead. Surely the Doctor wouldn't deny his request.
"Well," the Doctor finally said, "we still need to collect Tegan, outwit the Eternals, locate the TARDIS, thwart the Black Guardian, successfully conclude the race, and escape from this ship. But if getting off is really that important to you, I'll be happy to join you. Let's find a private room, take off these spacesuits, and get down to it."
"That wasn't what I meant..." Turlough trailed off, re-thinking his answer. The Doctor had misinterpreted his blurted words, but was that really such a bad thing? Turlough was doomed no matter what; he might as well get what enjoyment he could out of his last moments. "Aw, hell, your idea sounds like a lot more fun than mine anyway. Let's do it."
So they did.
And afterwards, they somehow managed to reunite with Tegan, find the TARDIS, win the race, vanquish the Eternals and the Black Guardian, and safely depart, so no one could claim that their time-out had been wasted.
