Dear Driving Instructor...

OK, I expected today to be a crap lesson. I had a big scare last week, and much as you might exhort me to "forget about it" (and much as I might try not to think about it), it's sitting there in the back of my head.

Obviously I'm learning to drive, so it's par for the course for you to micro-manage my driving and remind me when I've done things ( Read more... )

Argh! I really feel for you. I had a driving instructor like this, too. I really, really miss my Sydney driving instructor (based in Hornsby so probably too far from you), who was considerate, complimentary, safe and never stopped helping.

My instructor at the moment just starts political arguments with me (in an effort to get me to crash? If so it has almost worked a number of times...) and patronises me with "Sweetheart, bla bla bla". GRRRR!

I'm putting up with him because I only have four more lessons to go.

I really hope this doesn't happen again, and if it does, he/she responds to your comments.

W00t, only four lessons to go! Go you good thing!

(I am motivating myself with the idea of posting a picture of myself with my "P" plates!)

My first driving instructor was a lot like that! It really put me off learning to drive, actually.

Yeah, sounds like this is not a unique experience!

Did you end up learning to drive? I have a bunch of friends who learned to drive in the country, who keep saying "Eek, I would hate to learn to drive in Sydney!", but I imagine most of the British cities would be worse.

No, I gave up. Although, it wasn't really intended as a permanent decision at the time, but then I moved to a series of places where it really wasn't necessary -- or places like London where you'd have to be insane to drive -- and in the meantime I developed environmental concerns too. Perhaps I'll learn one day, because it would definitely be useful, but I don't really need to at the moment, so there's no rush. Plus, I really don't have the money for lessons at the moment! :)

I hope you survive the experience, and that your instructor starts to be rather more professional. That was what annoyed me. He didn't have to like me, but I just wanted him to be professional and stop with the patronising/buddying thing.

And at least if you learn to drive in the city you'll be used to it!

:)
