I finally have an air conditioner in my lab again. Except it's not my original one...
After the
A/C failure back in mid August, I had to
bring the dead unit to a sh-thole of a repair shop.
It has been
sitting there ever since August 19, and I think that it's still there.
Meanwhile, I had various fixes here... For about three weeks, I had a series of fans successively propelling cold air from one part of the laboratories down the hallway and into my computer room. I called it "The Fan Brigade", and it actually worked! In the beginning of September, the Buildings and Grounds dept was able to reclaim a spare A/C unit from another location and loan it to me, so I dismantled the Fan Brigade.
Monday this week (10/4), I decided to get a bit hard-nosed... I called the distributor, who are the agents who principally handle the warranty repair, and complained about
the sh-thole of a repair shop and the 2-month delay in the repair. After a lengthy, healthy spewing of my righteous indignation, he agreed to give me a replacement A/C unit.
So, once
again... no university-based transportation.
So I drove my car from South Orange to lovely scenic Long Island City.... and back to the distributor. It took a few minutes of getting mad, but I got the replacement A/C unit - the box is stamped factory-refurbished. Still, they fulfilled the warranty.
I had a bit of a talk with the owner/manager... it seems that the sh-thole of a repair shop showed the manager paper copies of the P/Os for the replacement motor for my A/C, and claims that the manufacturer wasn't sending the replacement part. Funny... the only thing the manager would tell me is that the manufacturer wasn't returning his calls. I told the owner I think he's being misled by the repair shop and that his relationship with his customers is being poisoned by them... The most generous estimate is that the repair shop manager kept me in the dark and didn't tell me when the repair ran into problems necessitating the replacement. But I still think the manager is a thieving loser king of a sh-thole domain.
... and I
still need a haircut...
