Provided I remember, the next eejit who rings me up to claim my router is downloading Martian earwig viruses is going to get a recitation of "Jabberwocky".

That'll larn 'em.

You could hang up, or use an answerphone to screen calls.

I usually say rude words at them. But wasting their time is a fgood form of revenge, I reckon :)

Do you blame the people who make nuisance calls? I don't. They're prob low-paid and overworked.

For no good reason, here's my peewit userpic using a photo wot you took.

If they were just ordinary trying-to-sell-me-things-I-don't-want callers, I would have some small sympathy for them, just say "not interested" and/or hang up.

But these people are scammers, pretending to be from my phone and broadband provider in order to trick me into giving my account information so they can steal from me.

As such I feel justified in annoying them and wasting their time. Any time I'm reciting nonsense poems at them is time they're not conning someone, after all. it's almost a public service :)

You don't need to remember it. Just ask them to hang on while you go and find a copy.

I know it off by heart and have for years. I reckon it should confuse them, especially if I just insert the lines conversationally into the dialogue, as it were.

The Canada Revenue scam recently hit my area. An automated service call telling you to call a particular number to deal with back taxes owed or else the police are coming to your house to arrest you.

And then there are the repeated calls from a duct cleaning company. I used to try to put them off politely. Now I just hang up.

Our telephone provider has a free service whereby I can ban calls from the last number which called me, so these people only get one shot at it. Except that they seem to have a vast fund of different numbers to call from, alas.

I don't have caller id and am on the no telephone solicitation list but it doesn't seem to be of much help.

Yes, we're on the equivalent of that here, but of course all that does it stop legitimate businesses from calling. Scammers take no more notice of it than they do of the other laws they're breaking :(

"Martian earwig viruses."

Now that I've stopped laughing, I'd just like to pull that out for further admiration. :-)

:) Glad you like it :) Makes about as much sense as what they *actually* say, anyway :)
