I had this song in mind, yes... although admittedly it did not turn out as I had originally envisioned, particularly at the end. I didn't anticipate the fog like that... Originally, I was thinking the end could be shot at one of the clearcuts which are occasionally passed on the drive between Portland and the coast.
I really enjoyed this. It makes me want to do something similar.
I have some technical questions. Does your camera record sound? It's amazing how much the mood of the video is determined by the music. I wonder what it would be like if we heard some of the ambient noises from each scene from time to time: voices, laughter, flowing water, and so on...
And how much time did it take to put together the video?
You seem to have reservations about the video quality, but I think it's perfectly fine, for YouTube anyway (I don't imagine you were planning to project it on a cinema screen). Instead of obsessing too much about equipment quality, you could think about the content, about what other stories to tell.
The camera does record sound, yes. But the microphone is really poor, so the sound quality is undoubtedly worse than the picture quality by leaps and bounds. I removed all the camera sounds in the editing process. In my original idea, I was actually going to weave some of the camera sounds into the music like you suggest-- it is certainly possible. I was also going to overlap some of Obama's words from his speech at the rally at the end (that audio came out decent because he was projected so loudly over the crowd noise by speakers). In the end though, I decided the quality was better without the poor camera sounds-- they only detracted from the ambiance. It's something that could be incorporated in future projects though, if attention to sound quality is cared after during the filming process (in most of my clips there is static wind-noise permeating them
( ... )
i've been away a long time, so forgive me if i should know this, but are you driving cross country with a group of friends?
and it seems that in all the time i've had you on my friends list, you've never had a job. at least never one that you've mentioned, and it always seemed to me that travel around a lot. i haven't looked, but i seem to recall your being reasonably close to my age. are you earning your keep as a writer? if not... then what is it that pays your expenses?

Ahh, Portland. I have been there exactly ONCE in my lifetime, but I find myself missing it just from that experience.

What's keeping you from coming back to Portland? You should come!
