I still post here, but I agree it's pretty dead. Many of the people and communities whose posts I find most interesting seem to be inactive, having moved on to greener pastures. I'm considering doing the same myself. What do you think of Tumblr vs., say, Wordpress and the other alternatives out there? I'm considering starting a music blog (I rarely write about music on here) and I'm wondering what platform would be best for that.
Tumblr is more social media based than Wordpress and other blog sites. Tumblr is modern "micro-blogging"... and interaction is restricted more toward liking, reblogging, and one-liner comments. It's not as good for interaction and discussion as livejournal-- but then, nothing is.
Tumblr works best as a pinboard for sharing media. Lots of people use it for journaling, but entries tend to be shorter.... more like a glorified twitter account without any character limits.
With Wordpress, it's for full-length blogs, but again.... it's not really a social media thing. It's less about forming a network of 'friends' that you share ideas with, more about public/professional blogging.
Tumblr might work for a music blog. You can post music on there very easily. If you're looking to write essays, wordpress would probably be better. I like the ease of Tumblr-- it's actually kind of addictive... and since I write online for a living, the micro-blogging format works for what I have time for. Just depends on what you want to do with it.
Thank you for the advice. That's all helpful, but I kind of want to do both (post music as well as write essays, though not really long ones). I have Facebook for the cutesy microblogging stuff. I don't have Twitter and have no interest in using it. I want my blog to get some traffic and attention, but I'm not necessarily interested in monetization, at least not yet. I know you didn't mention that explicitly, but I take that to be a part of what public/professional blogging is for some these days. I also would like to write more essays about literary, cultural, and other non-music stuff. Do you think that should all be included in the music blog, or does it make any sense to have a separate blog for other stuff? I imagine there are easy ways to have subdivisions within one blog (unlike LJ, where as far as I know you still have to sort stuff in Memories).
I come here to read Dilbert, xkcd, and the lj of one of my friends/acquaintances who posts here regularly. I've occasionally thought about posting myself, but thought better of it. Usually i limit my online musings to pithier posts on facebook, where more people will actually read and respond to them.
