Man arrested for Koran desecration... in New York

Upshot: some guy tossed a Koran into the toilet, twice. And now he's under arrest by the NYPD's "hate crimes" unit.

Okay. Is this guy a dipshit, a punk, a little retard who probably deserves an informal asskicking? Hell yes.

Should it be a prosecutable offense to destroy a book because it is ( Read more... )

Welcome to sharia, de facto if not de jure. Personally, I can't wait for the lawsuits to fly over the foot baths being installed at the U of M Dearborn campuses. I mean, hell, it's a public school and they're using public money to put them in. Either that's OMG STATE SPONSORED RELIGION OMG THEOCRACY OMG OMG OMG OMG or it's not. Personally, I'd have no problem with it as long as there can be freaking Christmas tress on campus.

You're dead right about the resentment problem. It's something I keep trying to point out to one of my Canadian friends, at some point the American public will get sick of paying for the rest of the world's defense and getting stabbed in the face for it. And it won't be pretty when it happens.

I agree completely about the hate crimes. Beating up a gay man is wrong for only one reason: beating people up is wrong. The reasons I can think of to make it extra-special-wrong because he's gay are:

1) Gay people are very delicate and feel more pain than regular people.
2) Beating up a straight white man isn't all that wrong.
3) Gay people are more valuable to society.
4) Beating up gay people is just so damn tempting that extra deterrence is necessary.
5) We're not sure but it makes us feel awful guilty when people are mean to them, so we gotta do something.

And the Koran thing is just... I won't get too angry unless he's actually convicted, because "arrested for" doesn't mean anything really. Frankly being arrested but not convicted is about right; scare and shame the guy, but don't, you know, bring the law down on him.

Hell, you usually have to pay extra for it.

That's a pretty nice rundown on Why Hate Crimes Are Stupid.

Frankly being arrested but not convicted is about right; scare and shame the guy, but don't, you know, bring the law down on him.

Well, he's a Ukranian Jew, so I doubt he scares easily. I'm not happy at all about the propaganda field day CAIR is having, but that's hardly the NYPD's fault.

I don't think they'd have a case unless he managed to clog up the toilet. Plumbing bills can be nasty.

Turns out the guy stole the Korans so he is (probably) guilty of petty theft and if he did throw them in a toilet that would be petty vandalism. About the same as stuffing a whole roll of toilet paper down the toilet.
He's being charged with two felonies, criminal mischief and aggravated harassment.

Criminal mischief I can see, what I'm curious about is a)harassment of who or what, and b)aggravated how?

Of course, we'd have to get a statement from a prosecutor for either of those, which we likely won't.
